The Philadelphia 76ers—or simply the Sixers—have a rich history dating back to 1946, when the team first began as the Syracuse Nationals in Upstate New York. Over the course of more than 70 years, the team has taken 9 conference titles and 3 NBA Championships, boasting a long list of famous players like Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving, Charles Barkley, and Allen Iverson. The team has become synonymous with Philadelphia itself, and Sixers fans clamor to get tickets for games at Philly’s Wells Fargo Center.
Debuting in Syracuse as part of the National Basketball League, the Nats’ beginning years were a little shaky, only earning their first winning record in their third season. However, after the NBL merged with the Basketball Association of America to form the NBA, the Nats became an instant success. Over the next 15 years, the team would take home 3 conference titles and, in 1955, their first NBA Championship. The team relocated to Philadelphia in 1963, taking on the name 76ers from when the Declaration of Independence was signed.
In 1964, the Sixers signed legendary player Wilt Chamberlain, who, in 1966–67, helped lead the team to a record 68 regular season wins and their second NBA Championship. Later, at the NBA’s 35th Anniversary Celebration in 1981, the ‘66–67 Sixers would be voted the best team in the league’s history. Unfortunately, the next decade was a difficult one until the signing of Julius Erving in 1976. Alongside Moses Malone, Maurice Cheeks, and Andrew Toney, Erving took fans on an exciting 7-season ride with 3 more conference titles and their third and final Championship win over long-time rivals the Los Angeles Lakers.
The next 30 years were met by thrilling highs and disappointing lows. After controversial yet entertaining Charles Barkley joined the team, the Sixers suffered through multiple losing seasons known as “The Dark Ages,” but in 1996, they nabbed rookie phenom Allen Iverson. During this time, the team saw their greatest success in the 2000–2001 season. They returned to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1983, but eventually lost to the Lakers.
The 76ers will enter the draft holding their first round pick. They owe two second-round picks at 50th to the Minnesota Timberwolves that the Denver Nuggets previously owned and at 51st to the Golden State Warriors that the Toronto Raptorss previously owned. The 2022–23 Philadelphia 76ers season will be the 74th season for the franchise in the National Basketball Association.
