Originally premiering in Saint Petersburg in December of 1892, the two-act ballet was based on the story written by E.T.A Hoffmann: “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King”. Performing today around the world by several ballet companies, it has become one of the most well-known ballets of its time. Get your tickets today to step into the world of Clara, the nutcracker, and the Mouse King!
The first ever showing of The Nutcracker had caused a lot of mixed reactions from critics as well as fans. Some thought that the piece was beautifully orchestrated while others believed that it was an utter disgrace to watch. Nonetheless, performances began to happen outside of Russia including in Budapest in 1927 and England in 1934. The ballet came overseas in 1940 starting in New York City and eventually making its way throughout the rest of the country starting in the early 1960s. While it has become more of a Christmas tradition in the United States performing only during the holiday season, overseas it is performed year-round.
Today The Nutcracker is performed worldwide by various ballet companies, children’s theatres and local companies. Variations of the story have been turned into several major motion picture films, with the most recent being The Nutcracker and the Four Realms released by Disney. Bits from the ballet have also made appearances in other musical productions as well as television series such as The Simpsons.
