The game is played at Camping World Stadium in Orlando, FL The bowl is operated by Florida Citrus Sports, a non-profit group that also organizes the Cheez-It Bowl. The game was first played in 1947 and was known as the Tangerine Bowl, before being renamed the Florida Citrus Bowl in 1983. In almost every year since 1965, the Citrus Bowl has featured two Top 25 ranked teams

The Citrus Bowl is one of the oldest college football bowl games, along with the Gator Bowl and Sun Bowl The game has been known as the "Little Bowl with the Big Heart" because of all the proceeds from the game that were donated to charitable causes. in 1990, the game had National Championship implications as George Tech won the game, finishing the season 11-0-1 and was voted the National Champion. The 1997 game holds the record for the largest attendance (72,940) when the Florida Gators defeated the Penn State Nittany Lions.

The SEC and Big Ten have sent the most teams to this bowl with a combined 68 appearances.
