Fiesta Bowl History

The Fiesta Bowl has been part of some organization of bowls to determine a National Champion since 1992. In 1992, it was named as one of the Bowl Coalition games, but the Fiesta Bowl was never used to determine an overall champion. In 1995 the bowl organizers joined forces with the Sugar Bowl and Orange Bowl to form the Bowl Alliance which would guarantee each bowl to host a championship game. The Fiesta Bowl hosted the first in 1996. In 1997, the three Bowl Alliance bowls joined the Rose Bowl to form the Bowl Championship Series (BCS). In 2014, the Fiesta Bowl became a member of the College Football Playoff, allowing it to host a semifinal game every three years. In the seasons that the Fiesta Bowl serves as a semifinal, the Peach Bowl will be the other semifinal and the winners will face each other in the College Football Playoff National Championship. The Fiesta Bowl has donated over $12 million to charity.

The Big 12 has sent the most teams to the Fiesta Bowl with 14 total appearances, winning half of them. Not far behind is the Pac-12 with 13 appearances and six victories. Of all the teams that have received a Fiesta Bowl bid, the Ohio State Buckeyes lead the way with nine appearances, and five victories.
