Though they have never brought home a Stanley Cup, the Washington Capitals are regularly NHL Playoff contenders, and this could be the year when they win it all. Winner of the Presidents’ Trophy for the past 2 seasons, the squad is ready to convert their regular season success into postseason glory. Captain Alexander Ovechkin leads the team in scoring so far this year and is likely to continue that trend with hard-hitting slapshots and thrilling breakaway goals. Make sure you get your ticket to see the Capitals play at Capital One Arena right away, as they’re sure to sell out quickly.
The team was founded as an expansion franchise in 1974 by Abe Pollin. After spending much of the ‘70s at the bottom of the division, the 80’s brought some success. Thanks to stellar play from Mike Gartner and Dennis Maruk, the Caps made it to their first playoff game in 1983 followed by a staggering 14 straight years of postseason appearances. The next decade featured less spectacular teams and a rebuilding mindset, and then they drafted Alex Ovechkin who changed everything. He got off to a hot start by leading the team in goals his first year and has done the same nearly every year since.
The Washington Capitals will open the season at home against the Boston Bruins on Wednesday, October 12 at Capital One Area. Washington has six homestands of at least three games on the schedule, the longest being a four-game stretch at Capital One Arena from November 5 to November 11.
