What you can expect

Spend a day roaming the streets of Essaouira, a port city on the Atlantic Coast. A private guide shows you the city's main sights, starting from its iconic ochre walls, and introduces you to the rich history of the place as you roam from Place Moulay Hassan to the Scala ramparts.

Leave Marrakech in the morning, driving west toward the Atlantic Coast. You'll recognize Essaouira as you approach by the sturdy, amber-color walls that surround the port city and protect it from the intense winds that blow off the coast. Upon entering the historic fortification, get dropped off by Place Moulay Hassan, a gorgeous plaza that offers incredible views of the sea. Begin walking, first visiting the Scala ramparts that were built in the 18th century and designed by French architect Theodore Cornut.

Continue strolling through the breezy streets, stopping in at handicraft markets where you can find unique trinkets made from native thuya wood. Your guide also gives you time to grab lunch on your own—try delicious and fresh seafood at any number of restaurants around the city. In the afternoon, visit a workshop where indigenous Berber women create argan oil products and learn about the significance of the commodity in Berber communities. Your tour ends with a scenic drive back to Marrakech, ending in the early evening.
