It is a short distance to the Arno River, the longest and most important river of Tuscany. It runs through the town, dividing it into two. As we cycle the streets alongside the Arno, there are many splendid palazzos to admire. Near Giardino Scotto, a public park, we cross the river and continue toward the suggestive Church of Santo Sepolcro, constructed in the Middle Ages by the Knights of Malta formerly known as the Knights Hospitaller. We double back using the bridge Ponte di Mezzo and head to an area of Pisa off the beaten track, the Mercato delle Vettovaglie, the fresh produce and food market. As the tour draws to a close, we visit Piazza dei Cavalieri, where the most prestigious Italian university, Scuola Normale Superiore, is located.
