Activity itinerary

Central Gardens at Garden of the Gods
  • 10m
The Central Gardens is an easy, two-mile trail through the heart of the Garden of the Gods. It’s an excellent introduction into this fantastic place, giving us a chance to see some of the most famous formations in the park. Note: This 6.5-mile-long tour covers the essentials of Garden of the Gods in 1-2 hours.
Kissing Camels Golf Course
  • 10m
  • Admission ticket not included
The first thing to know is that the two camels aren’t actually two different rocks. At one time, they looked no different than the rest of this rock face. But there was a small crack within one layer of the sandstone. A crack so small it was practically invisible.
White Rocks Trail
  • 10m
Most folks call this White Rock, but I like its other name better: Buffalo Rock. It gets the nickname thanks to the jutting peak that resembles a buffalo in silhouette. When facing the formation, it's at the summit on the far right.
The Spa at Gateway Canyons
  • 10m
North Gateway Rock stands to our right; on our left stands South Gateway Rock. They look like two doors flung wide to welcome us into the Garden of the Gods.
Great Sand Dunes National Park & Preserve
  • 10m
Two key ingredients are pressure and time. If you pile up enough sand, it puts an awful lot of weight on the sand at the bottom of that pile. The pressure isn’t just pressing down, but also pressing each individual grain into the surrounding grains.
Pulpit Rock Park
  • 10m
That compact rock formation on our left? It’s about halfway between us and the towering South Gateway Rock. That’s Pulpit Rock! The name comes from the fact that it looks a bit like a preacher’s pulpit when viewed from the right angle. Of course, the preacher would have to be awfully tall to be visible over this rocky outcropping!
South Gateway Rock
  • 10m
South Gateway Rock, which we passed earlier. Notice all the little pockmarks in the face of it? Those actually point to one of the more challenging features of climbing this kind of sandstone.
Sentinel Spire
  • 10m
Walk over to those. These are known as the Sentinel Spires. Situated between the two Gateway Rocks, these spires serve as guardians who watch all those who enter the Garden of the Gods. I’m sure glad they let us in!
Siamese Twins
  • 10m
The Siamese Twins Trail is ahead on our right. This mile-long trail takes about 20 minutes, and features two amazing rocky spires. Turn into the parking lot on the right if you’d like to hike the trail.
Balanced Rock
  • 10m
It’s impossible to miss Balanced Rock from here. This huge formation appears to balance impossibly on a red sandstone platform. So how does it do it? Despite the name and appearance, this rock is actually not balancing. It’s all part of one formation!
Giant Footprints
  • 10m
The Giant Footprints looks like another rock formation, but something’s a little off-kilter. Literally! Ordinarily the strata of rock are horizontal, like a lasagna. But here, they’re diagonal, pointing at a 45-degree angle. It's like a giant stepped on a loose floorboard.
