Bunkyo, Tokyo Hotel Rooms at the Independent

Excellent hotel and price is reasonable for a Tokyo hotel. Excellent for families with theme park just outside hotel. Easy to get around with subway and train, 15 mins to Tokyo, Shinjuku via train. Will go back there again when I visit Tokyo.

Facilities are too old, but you can enjoy quiet stay as if you were not in Tokyo.

We had requested a non-smoking room, but received a smoking room that had gotten "extra cleaning." It was OK, although there was a slight smoke smell.

A group of us stayed here during the Japan Grand Prix Orchid Show, and while the rooms were small, they were immaculate and comfortable. I was able to pile up my stuff in the corner and leave my clothes in the suitcase. The staff at the front desk was friendly and helpful, the breakfast was WONDERFUL, and it was very nice to have laundry available on site. The hotel is convenient to Tokyo Dome, shopping, and eating in all price ranges. It was my first time in Japan, and the stay at the Wing made the experience all the better. I would certainly stay there again.

Hotel was recently refurbished so room was clean and comfortable and everything worked as it should. Location is a short walk from Ueno train station, Skyliner to Narita airport, subways etc., close to parks, shopping and restaurants. The area behind the hotel has a lot of small bars and clubs which can be an attraction or a nuisance depending on your point of view. I found the persistence of the nightclub doormen to be slightly annoying, but that is no reflection on the hotel and if you approach the other way from the main street it's not an issue. There are lots of people walking around at night and the area seems generally safe. There seem to be lots of choices of restaurants nearby as well as several convenience stores and cafes. There is some street noise but the room is quite well insulated and this is Tokyo after all. Hotel breakfast buffet was good and they had free coffee in the lobby. The room was very small (typical of Japanese hotels though), but well equipped. The bathroom was particularly compact, I would not recommend for the claustrophobic. There is an extra charge for late checkout. I would stay there again or recommend to a friend.

Haven't stayed any other hotels in Tokyo, so cannot compare too much on price. We didn't pay a fortune, and considering some of the other places we stayed in Japan, we were happy enough. Small room (triple), but comfortable, clean, quiet. In most cases, a hotel room is simply a place to put your bags, and sleep. Perfectly adequate for this - no problems in this department.

very accomodating staff; always polite and smiling. Breakfast selection could have been better; rather have more of a Japanese style breakfast. Hotel close to a number of places once you know the directions. Overall great hotel!
