the 7 plagues of La Perla Negra

Pros: The location is the only thing going for this place
Cons: The feeling of filth, dirt and total lack of cleanliness permeates this entire property and makes it un restful, disgusting - lots to improve
Location: 15 to 20 minute walk from Puerto Viejo. Yoga retreat 2 doors down. Beach across the road. Access to tours & good @Banana Azul 200 yards down the road
I wish it were only 7 plagues. We are so upset that our family saved up for this vacation and trusted these owners with our hard earned money. It is beyond upsetting to feel so cheated out of a well deserved and much needed vacation. Our family feels completely robbed. 1) Photos of the bathrooms on Expedia are not what we saw or experienced - guest rooms have suicide showers, cracked tile, no moulding. 2) The other photos of this property are take from great distances - '50 foot looks good shot', but up close this place is worn out almost beyond repair, with critical items literally falling apart, or so worn and dirty you do not feel clean using them. Holes in sheets 3) Raw sewage - imagine waking up in the middle of Christmas night to the strong smell of raw sewage. We had sewage back up into two rooms 4) An infestation of bugs swarming throughout our daughters' room into their luggage, toothbrushes and personal items caused us to all sleep in one room together twice. 5) The staff takes over and uses the facilities, including the pool table in the lobby area, brings their friends and family in to take over the pavilion, pool beach, etc. 6) The owners have a standing agreement with the adjacent property, Joanna's Casitas, who's many many guests, take over the pool, pavilion, lounge chairs, kitchen area, tables, beach - there is no place for La Perla Negra paying guests to stay. La Perla Negra Guests pay extra to use BBQ 7) Breakfast buffet is laughable and sparse.

Nice staff but in need of updating

The staff was very nice and helpful but the rooms needed updating. The bedding and curtains were in bad shape. The thing we struggled most with was that there were only two plugs in the room. Trying to charge phones and cameras plus use refrig and hair dryer was impossible.

The room that we had did have a great view over the pool and ocean, but other than that it was a disappointment. The bed covering was missing 1/2 of the bed skirt ... The window coverings were dirty and dingy ... The shower was either hot or cold .... and there was no ice available at the front desk. For the price of $98 US a night I would have expected more. A few little details and the place could have some charm.

The most relaxing place in the world. The best ocean view in Puerto Viejo. The staff was great. Olga and Jessi were fabulous. Helped us with all of our needs. From local tours to great restaurant choice. The hotel is low key and away from the lively town. We WILL BE BACK!

How can this be 3 star!

Pros: Just the location close to the sea
Cons: just everything! this hotel needs either a complete redo or otherwise please rate this hotel as a max. 2 star or even 1 star Hotel
Location: Puerto Viejo is just not worth the drive
We spent 15 days travelling around in Costa Rica but this were certainly the worst two days we had. We had the opportunity to experience serveral hotels during our holidays. This hotel should never ever be a 3 star hotel. Hotel employees are just not carrying in any way about their guests (no help with luggeage, no recommendations what to visit) and the rooms are just dirty and unclean. No safe, no air conditioning, no minibar just very very basic and I don't even won't to go into the breakfast. Dogs barking the entire night so you will be awake for sure at 4 o'clock in morning. That's was the only bad experience we made in Costa Rica and luckely we left 1 day earlier and for sure a no-go for families!! On top that's the hotel we paid the most even much more than 4 star hotels we stayed over

Wonderful Setting

Location: Local bar/restaurant was owned by US people and it was full of characters. Kids learned a lot.
The local and beach settings were perfect for our family of 7. Out of the way and quiet. Lots of local Costa Ricans. Only downside was that the rooms were full and staff was overwhelmed. We did not get into our rooms until after 7 PM!

L'hôtel est très loin de tous les services. Pour le prix, pas de climatisation. Aucune info, touristique.
