    Pocket Guide: Nicaragua

Nicaragua is best known by many as the "land of lakes and volcanoes." There are eight active volcanoes in this beautiful Central American country, which shares its borders with Costa Rica and Honduras. It is also home to the largest body of fresh water in Central America, known as Lago de Nicaragua. The country has coastlines on both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean providing visitors with beautiful and scenic spots to surf and enjoy the sunshine. In recent years, Nicaragua has seen a boom in tourism, as people from all around the world come to experience the amazing surfing and trekking opportunities that it has to offer.

    Affordable Traveling in Nicaragua

Nicaragua is known as a top surfing destination, but many people don't realize how affordable it is. The córdoba is the local currency, and although American money is usually accepted, you should always carry some córdobas with you, especially if you plan on getting off the beaten path. Credit cards are usually accepted everywhere.

The average cost for basic rooms usually ranges somewhere between $3-30 a night, but these prices can drop even lower if you make the effort to find Nicaragua hotel packages ahead of time. Special discount rates can often be found if you make reservations for hotels in Nicaragua here on Expedia. Be sure to book your room in advance, at least on the first night that you arrive, because the last thing you want to do after a long flight is to wander around looking for a cheap Nicaragua hotel deal.

Eat Like a King For Cheap

Nicaragua hotels are not the only affordable aspect of this country. It is also possible to eat like a king for very low prices. Stick to restaurants that cater mostly to locals and you will be able to get a large plate of rice, beans, meat, and salad for around $4. When seeking cheap hotel deals in Nicaragua, make sure that you choose an area that isn't too touristy and has plenty of local shops. This will help you save a great deal of money and become more immersed in the local culture at the same time.

There are few places that give you as much bang for your buck as Nicaragua. Buses are affordable, and booking even a few cheap Nicaragua hotel deals in advance will save you enough money to spend more time traveling around and seeing this beautiful country.

    "Overnight stay in Managua"
This hotel is perfect for an overnight stay especially if you have an early morning flight. Across the street from the airport. The property is maintained and the rooms are very clean. There is WiFi and it does work. I have traveled and stayed in hotels in over 70 countries; this is by no means a 5 star hotel however, Its worth the money for a safe and short stay.

    "Very good hotel, great location"
The Colon is in the perfect spot for Granada, with most of the town's bars and restaurants within easy walking distance. The hotel occupies a charming old building with courtyards, a grand foyer, an outdoor dining area around the pool, and lots of mature tropical vegetation. The rooms are in excellent condition despite the age of the building. Two minor complaints: 1) The air conditioning in the room took a few hours to cool the room down, although when the room did get down to the right temperature it stayed that way for the whole trip, which was nice, as the daily highs outside were in the 90s. It helped that there were no automatic a/c shutdowns when I left the room like you experience in some hotels. I just wish the a/c hadn't taken so long initially. 2) The in-room safe has some confusing directions, and the lack of any illumination in the closet where the safe is housed made opening and closing the safe difficult. Overall this is a really good hotel and I'd recommend it to anybody.

"Convenient for airport; nice pool; slow service"
I stayed at this hotel with my 3 kids on the way into and out of Managua. It is very close to the airport and they have a free shuttle which was very convenient. They came quickly when I called after landing at 8pm, which was great. Nice front desk staff, but the restaurant was VERY slow and the waiters were not very friendly. The morning breakfast buffet was wonderful - worth the extra money to purchase in package. Nice pool area too -- especially for an airport hotel.

"Quiet resort on a private beach!"
Before booking I read several negative reviews. My experience was much different. I found the staff to be friendly and kind (it sounds like most of the staff was replaced about a week or two before we got there). Food service is slower than food service in the US, but that is typical in Nicaragua and everything was fresh. The bungalows are fantastic and the private beach was incredible. I highly recommend this place.

We really enjoyed HC Liri Hotel! The staff was extremely pleasant and helpful. The breakfasts were included and delicious. It's on the beach, but just off the main strip so it's a bit quieter, but just a 5-10 minute walk and you're right in the action. Highly recommended!
