    Pocket Guide: Nicaragua

Nicaragua is best known by many as the "land of lakes and volcanoes." There are eight active volcanoes in this beautiful Central American country, which shares its borders with Costa Rica and Honduras. It is also home to the largest body of fresh water in Central America, known as Lago de Nicaragua. The country has coastlines on both the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean providing visitors with beautiful and scenic spots to surf and enjoy the sunshine. In recent years, Nicaragua has seen a boom in tourism, as people from all around the world come to experience the amazing surfing and trekking opportunities that it has to offer.

    Affordable Traveling in Nicaragua

Nicaragua is known as a top surfing destination, but many people don't realize how affordable it is. The córdoba is the local currency, and although American money is usually accepted, you should always carry some córdobas with you, especially if you plan on getting off the beaten path. Credit cards are usually accepted everywhere.

The average cost for basic rooms usually ranges somewhere between $3-30 a night, but these prices can drop even lower if you make the effort to find Nicaragua hotel packages ahead of time. Special discount rates can often be found if you make reservations for hotels in Nicaragua here on Expedia. Be sure to book your room in advance, at least on the first night that you arrive, because the last thing you want to do after a long flight is to wander around looking for a cheap Nicaragua hotel deal.

Eat Like a King For Cheap

Nicaragua hotels are not the only affordable aspect of this country. It is also possible to eat like a king for very low prices. Stick to restaurants that cater mostly to locals and you will be able to get a large plate of rice, beans, meat, and salad for around $4. When seeking cheap hotel deals in Nicaragua, make sure that you choose an area that isn't too touristy and has plenty of local shops. This will help you save a great deal of money and become more immersed in the local culture at the same time.

There are few places that give you as much bang for your buck as Nicaragua. Buses are affordable, and booking even a few cheap Nicaragua hotel deals in advance will save you enough money to spend more time traveling around and seeing this beautiful country.

"Perfect lay-over after a busy travel day."
When we arrived, our booking was found and we were promptly led to our room. Our concierge turned on our air conditioner and closed the blinds. He told us where the restaurant was and we were on our own. Perfect. The bed was new, everything was clean. Our evening was calm and uneventful, our sleep was undisturbed. We were on our way to Playa Marsella by 10am the next morning, so breakfast was important. The buffet here was a real high-light. From the fresh brewed coffee to the custom made omelette...everything tasted fantastic. If fresh fruits are your thing, no shortage here either. I would recommend this hotel to anyone. Make your bookings in advance, don't think that you'll get in simply by presenting yourself at the front desk, especially if your flight was delayed. Calm, safe, relaxing, friendly.

"Please stay here if you are in Granada"
What a great stay! The hotel is a lovely example of the Colonial Architecture found in Granada, which is evident in the beautiful courtyards and also the rooms. At first I was a little disappointed because our room faced the back of the hotel and therefore the balcony faced a brick wall and was basically useless. However, between the music from the main square and the incredibly loud birds (seriously I have never heard such loud birds) at sunrise and sunset, it was really best to be in the back! The staff was always around and very helpful, from making reservations and recommendations to helping me practice my Spanish. Special thanks to Victor and Carlos for their close personal attention and for remembering our names. The breakfast was very fresh and delicious. I loved the orange and or mint infused water, the guava French toast, omelet station, gallo pinto, and really everything. My only complaint would be that the pool was really too cold to go in. It would have been nice to be able to take a dip after a hot day in the city.

    "Very Relaxing Resort!"
Punta Teoneste was fantastic! It was very private and quiet and absolutely beautiful! The outside bathroom concept was one of our favorite features. You literally shower under the stars; however, be warned that there is no hot water, so it is best to shower while the sun is still high! My husband and I stayed for four nights and for two of those nights, we were the only guests there. The other two nights, there was one other couple. If you are the kind of people who require nightlife, then this is not for you. There is nothing to do in the evenings...the villas do not even have tv! We had activities planned most days, so we were tired and ready for bed as soon as dinner was over! As for the food, it was good; however, it was extremely greasy. There were pools of oil on our plates after every meal. Drinks were very weak, which was annoying considering the price we were paying for such a small glass, but they were very refreshing. The staff could have been a little friendlier. Part of issue was our limited Spanish (shame on us!), but communication was a real challenge. I tipped for every single meal and drink we ordered and most of the time, the staff did not even acknowledge it. All in all, we really enjoyed our stay at the resort. The villas were clean and comfortable and the scenery was breathtaking. If you enjoy the ocean, then you will love spending the days on the beach. I felt like a child again playing in the waves. Make sure you rent boogey boards! Great time!
