Would return to this hotel.

The room we stayed in was very nice. Had a keyless entry for the door which was great. Never had to keep track of the key. It is a quiet area which was nice. Overall a great stay. They did burn the sugar cane in the area, but it was not a problem for us.

Great place to stay

If you want to feel like you’re at home, this is a great place to stay. Fully equipped condo unit and the amenities are excellent. We had a lot of fun BBQing using their gas grills and the pool is also well maintained. We saved so much money on food since we got to cook our own meals. Unit is also air-conditioned and the view from the penthouse is awesome. I will definitely go back to this condo resort.

Traveler's tip on shopping

Farmer’s market is located less than a mile from the unit. I suggest that before going shopping for groceries/food you will be using for your stay, better check out what the unit has. The unit we stayed at basically had all the condiments we needed so we didn’t need to buy those small items.

Ocean view was fantastic!

We had an ocean view room - costs a little extra but totally worth it. Waking up to the blue sky and sea was a real treat. Eating dinner on the lanai was great (they have bbq’s for guest use). Property was well maintained and pool area was clean and neat. The hotel is located on a beautiful stretch of beach and walking ever morning was lovely!

Traveler's tip on local attractions

The 6 mile drive to Paia was lovely with the sugar cane fields gently moving with the breezes. This little town on the way to Hana is a gem of an artists colony. Friendly people, fun food and lovely places to shop or look. It is also next to a wind-surfing beach which was nice.

Good deal

Sugar Beach is a fairly average condo with a great location. It was easy to get to from the airport, and I liked the beach access.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

The Pacific Whale Foundation Aquarium is really close by and fun to visit. If you go to Lahaina, Warren and Annabelle’s has a great magic show.

Average

The hotel in itself was average, not sure if the room we stayed in was one that has already been remodeled as it did have some new stuff. My biggest complaint was that the air conditioner did not work well and the bathroom was small. It was tolerable but could have been better. The location of the hotel was awesome, beach is within walking distance, clean pool, general store with a good variety of products on site. Overall would stay there again, but would say something if air conditioner not working. Loved Maui and will definetly be back.

Great stay

we had an awesome time in maui. our condo room 328 had everthing we needed to include all towels, dishes, washer&dryer, etc.,oh and the oceanfront view was so beautiful, the only thing we didn’t like was the smell, it smelled like a basement but that is due to being so close to the ocean.. if you stay here you will need to rent a car everthing was about 10 to 15 minutes away (walmart, souvenor shops, and eating out). we plan on coming back to maui in a couple of years and i hope to stay in same condo. WE LOVED MAUI!!!!!!!!

Traveler's tip on local attractions

The ocean center was amazing. The road to Hana was beautiful, but a long trip. Everone was really friendly on the island.

Would Return

Kehei is a good centrally located and reasonably priced place to stay. The room had a great ocean front view. It was really relaxing. Each condo is individually owned, so you may get an updated room or not. Our room had some updates in the living room and the kitchen, which was nice. The bathroom looked like they tried to make it more updated. I think it just depends on the owner. We didn’t have any problems with our room. We met one person who had trouble with their room when they first got there. The maid didn’t come to clean their condo before they arrived, so he contacted the owner directly and it was taken care of immediately. The exterior was being painted when we were there, but it didn’t bother us because it was done when we were gone during the day. It was nice to see that they were making some improvements. The pool also seemed like they had just updated it. It was very nice to have a washer and dryer in our unit. There were only a certain amount of towels, so we were able to clean the towels for reuse. Overall, we had a really nice time and we would probably go back there.

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

Kehei’s location allowed us to travel to parts of the Island we may not have traveled to if we were staying on West Maui. Makena has all types of great snorkeling spots. Kehei is lower key than West Maui. Many of the locals we had met on all parts of the island lived in Kehei. It is not a resort area, so you will have to travel to other parts (e.g. West Maui and South Maui’s Wailea) of the island to get that experience.

Great budget hotel

This hotel was in a great location and for the price was a good deal. Each unit is maintained by different owners, but the location and having a kitchen outweighed any issues we had. We weren’t in the condo that much, we were enjoying the sites. I will stay there again!

Not Impressed

Condo was very close to the ocean. However, not a great swimming beach (lots of rocks, some quite large). Not a beach to lay out on. Pool and hot tub were nice. The area was not crowded but close to other accomodations (food, better beaches, activities, etc.) Room smelled of serious mildew, floors were dirty, shower dirty and lever broke the 2nd day. Towels smelled of mildew. Couch and cushions very outdated and dirty looking. Would not stay here again.

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

Kaamole Beaches very nice - clear water, no rocks, nice sandy beach. Definately go snorkeling.

Loved it!

Nice condo right on the beach - great walking beach right outside our door. Dina’s Sand Witch right on the hotel grounds - casual, friendly place with good sandwiches.

Traveler's tip on dining

Alexander’s in Kihei - very casual, plastic outdoor tables, fish cooked however you like it, very reasonable prices.

Needs improvement, but OK

(Second stay) Sugar Beach is in nice area and seems family oriented. This was a return trip and renovations were still in progress including the pool being shut down for two days. There is a great gas barbeque area to cook at and the rooms have kitchenettes to save a few bucks (food and restaurants are pricey). Don’t expect cleaning, and be prepared to buy some toilet paper and laundry supplies as you get enough for a couple days. Showers need updating BADLY, but functional. Oceanfront room had a beautiful view and private lanaii to sit on. Great deal for those who want to spend their hard earned money on other Muai adventures rather than pricey hotels. Expedia Center is right in front of parking lot and the hotel has friendly adventure deals as well. Kihea is a good central location to do all Maui has to offer. Save some money and hang out here...you won’t want to be in a room all day anyway!

Haleakala crater is a day outing, 10,000 feet and above the clouds! Maui Magic- make sure you take a catamaran outing to Molokini for snorkeling, these guys are GREAT! Sunshine Helicopters- the money you saved on hotels is WELL spent here. Rent some snorkel gear and GO SEE THE FISHIES at Honoloa Bay! Atlantis Submarine- COOL! If you are too CHICKEN to snorkel, see the Maui Aquarium, (10 minutes from Kihea) and you’ll see all the beautiful sea life you missed!

very dissapointed

Sugar Beach resort is doing a complete demolition and remodel, including cutting stucco from exterior walls with concrete saws, and scraping old paint from exterior walls. The remodel is refered to as a refurbishing special and is very noisy and dirty,I will be asking for a refund of my money and will not return to Sugar Beach.

Sugar Beach Resort

The condo itself was comfortable. It had a great view and was fully equipped including a W/D. The bed was a little too firm. We were very disappointed though that there were renovations in progress which made laying out at the pool quite noisy. It would have been nice to know this BEFORE we booked. Aside from that once the renovations are complete it’s a great place to stay.

Traveler's tip on shopping

Lahaina Town had the best shopping and restaurants. The Paia Fish Market in Paia had good food at reasonable prices (compared to other restaurants on the island). Cool Cats in Lahaina had good burgers.

Ask about construction/renovation!!!!

The hotel itself was a 6.5 out of 10. We just happen to be there at the wrong time. Had we known this, we would have chosen another hotel for sure. The Sugar Beach Resort was under renovation. All kinds of construction noise, paint compressors etc. It was awful and hardly a relaxing vacation for us as crews of workers swarmed the hotel every morning to work on the hotel. We were there April 25th 2008 through May 3rd 2008 and it looked like they had been working on the hotel for a few weeks already. Be advised. Always ask about construction before you book the hotel! Hotels will never voluntarily tell you about construction at their hotel.

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

My advice. Always ask first about possible hotel renovation/construction going on before you book the hotel you plan to stay at. This is of course unless you like being woke up early every morning with crews of workers making obnoxious noise. Hotels will never voluntarily tell you about planned construction at their hotel. You need to ASK and be prepared for the consequences if you decide to book the hotel anyway.

Beautiful place to stay.

This trip was our honeymoon, the view from the room was beautiful. I liked how it had a washer and dryer made us feel more at home, vs being in stiff hotel room. The ocean seemed like finger tips away from our balcony. I really enjoyed staying here, and would very much stay again. Only thing that was bad was they were doing outside maitanance to the building the time we were there.

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

We went on the train ride, and to the aquamarine center and felt like it was a tourist trap. The money that was spent to get into these places wasnt worth what you get at all.

First time on Maui

Sugar Beach is a great place to stay if you like being on a beach that is quiet and has a nice breeze most of the day. It gets a little windy in the afternoon. We stayed in unit 408 April 21 to 28 and for being an ocean view condo it had a great view of the ocean and we actually saw a few whales in the distance from the balcony.(we took binoculars) The location is a great "home" base for visiting the whole island.

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

If you are driving south from Kihie and don’t want to get into heavy traffic, try using the new 31 highway. There are no shops on the road yet and a lot less traffic than S. Kihie Road. If you are a water person be sure to use good water shoes. The coral will destroy flipflops.

Great Hotel

This is a GREAT condo complex. Very convenient to everything and RIGHT on the beach, just steps from your door. I just wish I would have known that it was under construction, being re-done before I booked.

Great location

Dated and a bit worn, not much to look at from the street. The view is great, location is perfect, all the folks we met were friendly. We came back to Sugar Beach out of nostalgia, stayed there more than 10 years ago, not much has changed. You will quickly forget the dated condo when you wake up to the surf each morning, easy access for long walks on the beautiful beach, and the sunsets are beautiful. We will be back in October.

Traveler's tip on dining

Eat in Paia, all the places we tried were very good, Ono Gelato is fantastic for a treat. Avoid both Isana and Sansei sushi. You can get better sushi on the mainland or at a grocery store.

The resort fills all of your needs...comfort, pool, store, bar, gift shop, beach & BBQ area!Highly recommend for families with children or older adults. It is quite and relaxing atmosphere. It is in the middle of the island with all the activities within a short driving distance.

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

Highly recommend using Safari Whale watching company! They take you right to where the action is.

A room with a view!

We recently visited Maui for the first time. We wanted to stay at a place that was "ocean front" and Sugar Beach was the place to go. It was a bit dated but the view from our condo was spectacular. The popcorn ceilings, older furniture or dated wallpaper couldn’t ruin this vacation. Every morning we sat out on the balcony for breakfast with the sounds of the ocean. Also, we must have seen 50 whales outside our window. We opted out of maid service. So it was more like a one bedroom apartment than a hotel. It had a full kitchen and a washer and dryer. The people at the front desk were fine. We arrived after 9pm so it took us a while to find our room. Make sure you call the day before your arrival so they can give you all the info you need to check in if you arrive late. Kihei was a perfect location. It was convenient to lots of things. Overall, we had a terrific time and would stay here again.

Ocean footsteps away

The condo was ok for a rental property. Well provisioned in the kitchen for those stay at home meals. Sounds of the ocean just outside the door was great.

Great Place to Stay

My husband and I loved our stay at the Sugar Beach Resort. We had an oceanfront penthouse. The view was fantastic!! Even saw a few whales from our balcony. The condo was well stocked and clean. We had everything that we needed (beach chairs, beach towels, washer/dryer, cooler, games, books, movies, etc) It was nice to save money by cooking at "home" most nights. There is also a little store right at the resort, which was expensive but convenient if you needed something quick. We will be staying at SBR next time we are in Maui.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Shop at Safeway for groceries. Don’t take a tour bus to go to Hana, drive yourself. The tour buses are really expensive, and they don’t stop at very many places. We drove ourselves and used the book "Maui Revealed." Some of the hikes in the book are pretty hard, but well woTrth it. Eat at Da Kitchen in Kihei. It is a local Hawaiian fast food type restaurant, the food is great and the prices are cheap. Also, servings are huge, so it is a good idea to share.
