Excellent Value

The hotel was a 10-15 minute hike to Waikiki Beach through the beautiful downtown shopping / restaurant district, but it was outstanding value for the money. The room was fairly small, but clean and functional.

Waikiki Beach, just to say you’ve been there. There are quite a few underwater rocks and boulders, so bring your clogs or water shoes for safety. Also, pay attention to the jellyfish warnings, which make swimming dangerous for 5-10 days per month, and are based on lunar / tide cycles.

NOT A GOOD HOTEL

It had a horrible smell and the a/c was terrible as well.. Bathroom needs to be renovated and bed was dirty. Totally not worth staying there another night. I checked out the night before.

Inexpensive--Nice Room

I didn’t need much, so this was the perfect place for me. Had a great view and a decent sized room. I spent most of my time around the island, so the money I saved on the hotel room got spent doing fun things.

Would stay at the Hawaiian Monarch again!

The hotel clerks are very friendly, helpful and easy to talk to. Our room is very clean and the beds were really comfortable. The hotel location is not far from the beach or Ala Moana Shopping Center. I would definitely stay at the Monarch again! I give the Hawaiian Monarch a 3.5-star rating.

Unclean

Neighborhood outside hotel seems somewhat residential with high rise apartments but lots of traffic due to waikiki. Walking inside, couldn’t locate the front desk at first. The person at the front desk seemed nice and helpful, however going up the elevators and parking seemed a little dark and sketchy. Got off the wrong floor and the elevator closed on me because I didn’t get out in time. Didn’t have the card to work the elevator, so got stuck. Kinda scary situation. One of the floors it smelled like foot odor mixed with dried fungus and maybe some sort of food that went bad. When we reached our room, it was small and the closets were mothy and old and I didn’t want to hang my clothes in them because they were dirty. Bathroom was small and clean at least. Bed was comfortable for an afternoon nap. TV had cable which was a plus. But we checked out after 5 hours in the hotel. Felt uneasy about staying overnight and found another, more accomodating hotel.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

If you dont mind this kind of accomodation, cheap, location close to lots of attractions, but uncomfortable room/stay/expensive parking then this is your hotel

Staff was Excellent!

The hotel was defiantly great for the price. We didn’t go all the way to Hawaii to spend our time in the hotel room, so we picked a more modest hotel. It was a great price and had pretty much everything we needed. The staff was the most fantastic part. They were extremely helpful and talkative; always stopping what they were doing to help you get directions. If you stay at this hotel, ask for Vanessa at the front desk. She is absolutely amazing. If you ask her about an activity on the island, she drops everything she is doing, takes out a map and shows you everything you need to know. She’ll even place calls and make reservations for you. She’s like your own personal travel agent. Fantastic Person!

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

If you’re confused as to what to do on the island, talk to Vanessa at the front desk! She’ll tell you everything you need from bus routes to pamphlets to booking information. Best hotel receptionist that ever existed!

Nice budget hotel in good location

We enjoyed our stay here. It was a nice little room with a refrigerator and microwave. Quite nice for a budget hotel. The rooms were clean. It is in a good location. Within walking distance to the beach and lots of other attractions. There is a bus system for other attractions, such as pearl harbor that are farther away. It only cost $2.25 to ride the bus. The front desk clerks were friendly. The only thing we did not like was there was no ice machine. However, there was a bar downstairs and they gave us a plastic bag of ice that we put in the fridge and it lasted the rest of the week. I would definitely stay here again as the price is affordable also.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Do not take the tours offering the trip to Pearl Harbor. The bus only cost 2.25 a person. The memorial is free. The tour is way overpriced. As you can get there rather cheaply on your own. The only drawback is there are quite a few stops on the bus and it may take longer to get there that way. I guess it would depend on if time or money was more important to you.

Good Value

This is a good place for the money. If you want to be right on the beach this is not the spot.

Good hotel on a budget

Good hotel to sleep and stay on a budget. The room was clean and the bed was decent. There are minor renovations that need to be done like small cracks in the walls but other than that a cheap place to stay close to the start of Waikiki. The ice machine was broken but they do have a fridge and microwave.

Good Budget Hotel

This was a great hotel for a budget. We’re not sure if our air conditioner was broken but it was really loud! We also disagree with the "best pizza in town" being downstairs at the bar. Other than that nothing to complain about.

NEVER AGAIN

We asked for iron that we never received. The towels were stained (or dirty) with brown and black spots. The pillows were incredibly hard. The glasses were never replaced in our room. The trash of the nightstand stayed there all week. The walls were thin and it was loud. The hotel bar had terrible pizza. The parking was expensive and cramped. There were two people in our room and everyday they only put out one bath towel, thats it no wash clothes, no hand towels....terrible terrible experience. Will NEVER return.

Traveler's tip on dining

Cheeseburger Waikiki was a great restaurant with great burgers and one of the best Mai Tais around!!

IT WAS OK BUT WHEN YOU STEP OFF THE ELEVATORS ITS A WOW EFFECT

the room was ok but what got me is that when i called down to ask where the ice machine was they told me that it was broke and that i would have to go the the store and buy some i thought they should offer to buy it but i would say over all you get what you pay for.also noticed that they rent out alot of these rooms for people to live in

A Small Piece of Paradise

The building was on the older side and in need of some updating to furniture but, our room was both comfortable and clean. The location made it easy to get anywhere, whether you walked, used mass transit, or rental cars. The staff was also very helpful and willing to make our stay as nice as possible. There were also lots of very nice restaurants in the neighorhood.

Traveler's tip on dining

Our two favorites for dining were the Creme Pot, which served only breakfast and brunch items, was located in the lobby of the hotel. We also found the Cheeseburger Waikiki, which was on the corner to have in our opinion the best cheeseburgers.

Cramped and outdated but close to everything.

The hotel wasn’t really what I expected. The room was very cramped. I’m not sure who decided on the placement of the furniture but it was ALL wrong. The room was clean overall but there was signifigant wear and tear on the furniture. The view however was nice, and staff was helpful. There was no ice machine in the building and beware of the $12/day parking rate. I stayed for 9 nights. You get what you pay for. There were also doors with pictures taped on the outside of them which was very odd. Next time I will spend the extra money and stay somewhere else.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

One plus about this place is it is near EVERYTHING in Waikiki. You can walk to whatever you need.

It’s ok for the money

It is ok to stay if you plan on being out of the room all day. It is not a room with all the perks.I recommend you watch out for tourist hungry sales reps trying to sale their Pardise Vacation club packages and 2hour meeting. It not worth the free dinners and attractions. They are not only at the hotel they are every where.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

You must see Pearl Harbor, The North and South Shore tour and the Submarine. We really had a good time. I can not wait to go back.

Small, comfy, the price was right

This hotel has small comfy rooms, I was on the 24th floor in room #13 and I enjoyed my visit. No issues with bugs, room was clean. Only problem was the smell of smoke coming from a vent in the bathroom.

Traveler's tip on dining

Stay away from the International Market down the street in Waikiki, it gave me severe food poisoning.

Good for the price.

The hotel is is a great location, easily walkable to the beach, shopping center and eating places. The front desk receptionists were very helpful with information. The room was not very big, but adequate for a party of two, for a few nights stay. It was generally clean and the bed was comfortable. It has many amenities, e.g. coffee machine, frig, and microwave, TV that one would need for inphouse service. The bathroom, needed some maintenance work. Overall, it was a very good value for the cost-conscious traveller.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Try to get a bus route sheet from the tourist information center. Buses run all over the Island of Oahu. there are buses that circles the Island, at a low ticket price. It sure beats renting a car. Note that the Polynesian Cultural Center is closed on sundays

Hawaiian Monarch Hotel

Hotel was ok for the price in Waikiki. They should not charge for ice. There should be a hot tub. They did provide a free daily newspaper and had a good luggage checking policy. Usually you could check into you room early (we stayed 3 separate times during our 3 1/2 week stay in Hawaii). Location was good. There is an attractive mural of the Hawaiian monarchs at the lower level.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Use "The Bus". Excellent public transportation all over Oahu for $2 (even less with passes) and only $10 for a 4 year Senior Pas+ $5/month for unlimited riding. Bus fare or pass includes "The Boat" that makes a wonderful 55 minute trip from Aloha Tower to Barbers Point 6 times a day.
