Learn more about Canyon

Head to sights like Kluane National Park and Reserve as you discover the local area in Canyon.

The Canyon Creek Bridge was built in 1903 and reconstructed in 1942 when it was dismantled and a new one was hand-built in 18 days. It has been described as the most ambitious and important bridge to be built by the US Army 18th Engineers. When the Public Roads Administration built permanent bridges along the highway, the old pioneer bridge was left in place. The Canyon Creek Bridge was reconstructed by the Yukon Government in 1986/87. Approximately 10% of the original bridge was left in place and 85% of the cribbing. (September 2016)

Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Canyon?
The best area to stay in Canyon is the historic townsite, particularly around the White Pass & Yukon Route railway station.

This area is the heart of Canyon's visitor experience, offering a direct connection to its gold rush history. You'll find most of the town's restored historic buildings, interpretive displays, and trailheads concentrated here. It's a compact and easily walkable area.

For history enthusiasts and those interested in the Klondike Gold Rush, staying in this central location is ideal. You're within steps of the main attractions, including the remains of the tramway and the various historical markers that tell the story of the stampeders. It's superb for exploring the local heritage on foot.

When is the best time to go to Canyon?
The best time to visit Canyon, Yukon, is during the summer months, from June to August, for the most comfortable weather and access to all activities and during the winter for those seeking northern lights.

For those looking to experience the midnight sun and participate in outdoor activities like hiking, fishing, and kayaking, the summer offers long daylight hours and temperatures ranging from 60°F to 75°F (15°C to 24°C). This period is ideal for couples and families who want to explore the natural beauty of the Yukon with ease.

Travelers hoping to witness the spectacular Northern Lights should plan their trip between late August and April. During these months, the darker skies increase the chances of seeing the aurora borealis.
