Once you've covered all the fabulous attractions in San José, there's plenty more to discover in the region. Collect the keys to a rental car, stow your bags in the trunk and get out on the open road. We've come up with some drives you're sure to enjoy:

• Liberia is approximately 90 miles from San José. Popular tourist spots like Liberia Parque Central deserve to be high on your must-see list while you're in town.
• Why not check out the wonders of Puntarenas too? Major sights in this happening city include Puntarenas Pier. Puntarenas is roughly 40 miles from San José.
• Make tracks to Pavones Beach to rediscover nature. Pack a picnic to enjoy or just sit and unwind. From San José, it's roughly 140 miles away.

If you don't have a driver's license issued in Costa Rica, then you might need to get an International Driving Permit (IDP) in your place of residence to be able to rent a car. You should also be aware that if you do need an IDP, it has no validity on its own. You'll be asked to show your current driver's license your passport and other forms of ID as well. Lastly, make sure the credit card used to book the rental matches the name on your driver's license and passport. A few other things to note to rent a car internationally are:

• Age restrictions: You need to be 25 or over in most countries to rent a car. If you're younger, it might still be possible to rent a car but you'll have to pay a Young Driver's Surcharge. Additional restrictions may also apply to what kinds of cars you can rent.
• Driving limitations: Make sure you read the rules and regulations before driving away. You typically can't cross country borders, drive onto ferries or off road with your rental car.
