Hannover is the perfect city for a long weekend. Compact but brimming with culture, its attractions range from churches and museums, to modern bars and biergartens. Although many of its buildings were damaged during World War II, a number have been sensitively restored and in many neighborhoods the combination of post and pre-war architecture exists in harmony. That said being, some of the city's hotels are located on rather nondescript modern blocks. There are many options when staying in Hannover, and some of the best places to stay range from quirky design hotels to grand, palace-like five-star accomodations. Hannover is also an incredibly green city, both in its center where the Herrenhausen Gardens and Tiergarten are among the city's most famous attractions, and on its fringes, where the beautiful Lake Steinhude can easily be reached on day-trips.

Best Places to Stay for History

The best neighborhood to choose for an inaugural trip to Hannover is the attractive Old Town in Mitte, the city's center. Hotels here are a short walk from the sights of Marktplatz, where the impressive neo-Gothic Old Town Hall (Altes Rathaus) dates back to 1410. Parts of the Marktkirche are even older, and there are some fabulous city views from its tower. Nearby, the twelfth-century Aegidienkirche and engaging Hannover History Museum are also worth visiting. Mitte

Where to Stay for Parks and Gardens

No visit to Hannover is complete without strolling the sprawling fountain and sculpture-filled Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen on the edge of Nordstadt. There are four separate gardens to discover here, ranging in style from renaissance to baroque. Accommodations nearby are simpler and affordable. On the other side of the city, Kirchrode's hotels are on the doorstep of the city's deer park, the Tiergarten, originally created in 1678 as a hunting ground. For more active pursuits, book a hotel in Suedstadt to the south, near Maschpark. Alternatively, book accommodations near the shores of The Maschsee, a popular inner-city lake where it's possible to paddle-boat, canoe, and sail in the summer.

Like many German cities, Hannover has a long and strong brewing tradition. Reserve a room in Mitte for the best range of spots to enjoy a brew and to shop for unusual beers bottled in Lower Saxony and beyond. Hotels in Suedstadt are a little further from the action, but close to the excellent Biergarten Kaiserschänke. To the north, accommodations in List are conveniently located near Lister Turm Biergarten, one of the city's biggest biergarten.
