The brasstown resort overlook is a perfect place to see the entirety of the enchanted valley, Young Harris valley. To the south is Brasstown Bald, the tallest mountain in Georgia, stretching a GREAT height of 4,800 feet. Here at the resort you can go horseback riding for $25 a hour, get a spa day, play a great 18 holes of golf, or at night look up at the stars. On Fridays YHC, Young Harris College opens its observatory at this overlook and anyone is welcome to come and look up at the stars using a variety of telescopes. If you want to come for the leaves in the southern Appalachians I would recommend October 4th-20th to be here for prime color. It's that time of year. The time when people flock to the mountains to see color on the leads. Or at least here in the south it's that time of year. Hopefully this year will have some color, we will see tomorrow.
This was a culvert I found while walking down a small stream next to the road. I liked the window effect from the other side. The Susan B Harris chapel is the oldest building on campus. YHC is a Public four year liberal arts college that until recently was a Methodist affiliated two year liberal arts college. With enrollment averaging about 200-500 per year's class this small college offers a unique experience in the north Georgia mountains. This chapel, built in 1892, is the only original building remaining. On the side of the building worn brick marks where literally a hundred years of students have leaned against the wall, causing some of the brick to be worn off and the wall to now inwards. Young Harris College on Friday nights offers an show at the planetarium on campus, normally at 8:00 PM. After the show they drive over to the observatory and students and the public are able to use the telescopes to view the night sky. Normally three telescopes are used and set to different objects in the night sky. That night started with the Andromeda galaxy and Jupiter; with more the longer you stay.
I set up my camera to capture some time lapse photography for the college and some photos of their observatory. This shot, if you see what looks like a cloud, is actually the Milky Way galaxy. The andromeda galaxy is also in this shot.
If you have never looked through a telescope, I'd highly recommend it! It is easy to find astronomy clubs and observatories that are open to the public. It is really something to look through an eyepiece and see an entire galaxy. The brasstown resort overlook is a perfect place to see the entirety of the enchanted valley, Young Harris valley.
