Where to stay

in Out Islands

While Nassau and Freeport are better known, other Bahamian destinations of the Abacos, Andros, Bimini, Eleuthera, Exuma and more are also attractive destinations.

Look beyond Grand Bahama Island and New Providence Island to find perfect vacation spots in the Out Islands, generally not visited by cruise ships. You’ll likely find fewer people, meaning excellent opportunities to enjoy gorgeous island sunshine, beaches, reefs and waters in isolation.

Work your way through the ABCs, at least partway, starting with the Abaco Islands, an archipelago stretching for 120 miles (190 kilometers). This island string is particularly attractive to private sailors, allowing stops to visit quaint fishing villages or play golf. Bonefishing and snorkeling are popular on Acklins Island.

The pair of Andros islands are the largest of the Bahamas by size. Sunbathe and swim at quiet sandy beaches and dive along the expansive barrier reef in an abyss known as the Tongue of the Ocean. Travel inland for hiking and birdwatching in dense forests.

Ernest Hemingway practically birthed sportfishing during his years on Bimini in the 1930s. Visit today to follow in his footsteps or simply kayak along the shore and enjoy beaches, sunsets, seafood dining and Bahamian rum.

Exuma is actually two islands. Visit Palm Bay Beach, Three Sisters Beach and Coco Plum Beach on Great Exuma and Tropic of Cancer Beach on Little Exuma. To the north are the marine refuge of Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park and Big Major Cay with swimming pigs. Find remains of salt and cotton production around the islands and other historic spots in the Exuma capital of Georgetown.

The two Eleuthera islands have high cliffs, pink sand beaches and juicy pineapples. Book accommodations at an exclusive resort near Harbour Island or arrange dive trips to the many natural wrecks offshore. Other spots with appeal for escapists include the Berry Islands, Cat Island, Crooked Island, Long Island and San Salvador.

Despite their remoteness, most of these Out Islands do have airports, with domestic arrivals from Nassau or Freeport or international from Florida. Plan your stay to match available flights, which are generally not offered daily.
