For many years during the Middle Ages the town was fought over by the rival powers of Siena and Florence. The oldest surviving structure here is the castle, dating back to medieval times. Built into part of the old fort’s remains is the Church of Santa Maria Assunta. This is a 19th-century reconstruction of the original church that stood on this spot. Before stepping inside, survey the stone façade and the adjacent clock and bell tower.

Another church well worth a visit is the Pieve of St Leolino, situated a short distance outside of Panzano. It is thought to date back to the 8th century, although the current building was constructed around the 12th century. Admire the 16th-century portico and tour the interior to see religious art.

Take advantage of the Tuscan village’s scenic setting by walking or cycling through the green landscape of fields, olive groves and forests.
