Staff is friendly, helpful, and all speak some English, most are fluent. Beds are comfortable, bathroom is clean and spacious, breakfast is good and varied, restaurant is good and not outrageously priced. Not much within walking distance of the hotel, but taxi service is quick and not too expensive. Fare to Piazza Maggiore is about 7 euros. Pool is nice and well maintained.

Having to surrender our passports on arrival was slightly unnerving but they were returned after a 10-minute "registration process". Room clean, though rather small. Too few powerpoints meant a choice had to be made between running the fridge and watching TV. Restricted view from the balcony, but this was the trade-off for being in the centre of town just a stone's throw from Salsomaggiore's (limited) attractions. The hotel seemed to cater for a mostly Italian clientele, so whilst English was spoken by several staff members it paid to know a little Italian -eg being able to give your room number to the breakfast waiting staff. We did not visit the hotel pool or restaurant, breakfast being served in a separate "breakfast room" near the reception desk. Breakfast was the usual continental fare - cheese, ham, hard-boiled eggs, breads, cereals, cakes, croissants etc. A good if limited selection of these, though some items on our second morning had the appearance and taste of being leftovers from the day before. Juices and hot drinks from a machine, but fresh coffee also made by the staff on request. Be prepared to pay an additional 2 euros pppn tax on departure.

We didn't realise that this hotel is in Salsomaggiore Terme, a town about 40 kilometres from Parma when we booked it based on its good recommendations but were delighted by the hotel, the town and the Art Deco Terme building which is unique and spectacular. The hotel is a grand stone edifice built in 1911 and our room was large and comfortable with two Juliette balconies and views over the town and surrounding Autumn countryside. We had a king bed, desk and minibar. The breakfast which was in the former ballroom (a little faded and tired) featured lots of cakes and fruits but only cold poached or boiled eggs and minimal cereal. On the second day there was some bacon provided. There is no restaurant but there are some attractive options in the town and staff were helpful in pointing these out. You can spend the day at the Terme or a few hours like we did. Ultra modern facilities are provided inside the Art Deco building which is very beautiful with marble staircases and lovely leadlight windows. This town has a great deal of charm and the hotel is very good value indeed as others have noted.
