Visit the upper palace garden in Stuttgart to imagine yourself as a royal of the Kingdom of Württemberg in the 1800s.

Near the center of Stuttgart, Oberer Schlossgarten is a lovely square bordered by impressive buildings. This district played a central role in the city’s history and continues to be a focal point of modern Stuttgart. Walk through the park and view its numerous statues for a refreshing break while sightseeing or spend additional time exploring the details of the square and its historic surroundings.

Explore the past at two castles. The Old Castle, Altes Schloss, was built in the 10th century at Schillerplatz. This ancient fortress now houses the Württemberg State Museum where you can see the region’s history from the Stone Age to modern times.

Despite its name meaning New Stuttgart Castle, the Neues Schloss Stuttgart is also quite old, built in the late18th century. The huge horseshoe-shaped building is open for visitors of the ministerial arm of the state government. Stand in the Schlossplatz or Palace Square to photograph the baroque building beyond one of its lovely tiered fountains. A statue of Concordia stands on a tall column.

Walk a few steps away for a remarkable architectural contrast at the Landtag of Baden-Württemberg, the current home of Stuttgart’s state government offices. Tour the modern building to see the art treasures housed inside. The Staatstheater Stuttgart is just north. Visit this century-old building for opera, symphony concerts, dramatic plays, lectures and other performances. Photograph the building illuminated in the evening with reflection in the water of the park’s Eckensee in the foreground.

Come to Oberer Schlossgarten in August for the multiday Stuttgarter Sommerfest. Enjoy live music, gourmet food from top restaurants, shopping and socializing with city residents and visitors.

Walk to the garden in 2 minutes from the Charlotteplatz transportation stop in central Stuttgart. For a full day of parks and green spaces, continue walking northeast of Oberer Schlossgarten to Mittlerer Schlossgarten, Unterer Schlossgarten and Rosensteinpark, which features the popular Wilhelma zoo and botanical gardens.
