It’s an idyllic base from which to explore the maze of caves that punctuate the limestone topography with subterranean water channels and mesmerizing rock formations. Among the highlights of the area is the Macocha Abyss, which is technically a sinkhole, the largest of its kind in Central Europe. Observe the fascinating abyss from the upper or lower viewpoints outside. To reach it, make your way through the Punkva Caves until you see an opening in the roof. Continue through the cave system with a guide to learn about the monk who is thought to have discovered it in the 18th century. Climb aboard the boat on the underground river that resembles the River Styx in the Greek Underworld.
Above ground, Olšovec Lake offers a picturesque change of scenery. Stay overnight at one of the campgrounds around the lake and enjoy a meal at a restaurant overlooking the water. Come to the region in winter, when it’s covered by a thick layer of snow, making for stunning nature walks. Delve back into the depths of the nearby Balcarka Cave. Bring an extra layer of clothing, even in summer, to stay warm in the cool grotto.
