Colosseum showing night scenes, heritage architecture and a monument

Rome Travel Guide Video

Stand in awe of the ancient ruins, legendary artworks and breathtaking cityscapes that make Italy’s capital so alluring.

Some know it as the “City of Love,” others know it as the “Eternal City,” but whatever name it goes by, Rome remains one of the most special destinations in the world. Familiarity cannot tarnish the sheer magic of Italy’s capital, a city that is eternally beautiful, fascinating and romantic.

Rome is a name that is almost synonymous with history and for centuries it stood for one of the largest empires the world has ever known. Stroll around the storied streets of a city that was founded by Romulus and Remus, a pair of twins who, according to legend, were raised by wolves.

Witness the glory days of the Roman Empire in ruins such as the Roman Forum, which was once the heart of social and political activity in the city. The adjacent Colosseum is one of the city’s finest attractions, a beautifully preserved amphitheater that hosted gladiatorial games.

Walk up one of the seven hills that shaped the layout of the city. Palatine Hill, next to the Forum, contains some of the oldest ruins in Rome. The palaces of Capitoline Hill are not only spectacular buildings, they also house classical artwork in some of the oldest public museums in the world.

Religious devotees, art enthusiasts and culture vultures are all equally astonished by the Vatican Museums. The galleries, located next to the famous St. Peter’s Basilica, house masterpieces by Raphael and Donatello. Finish in the Sistine Chapel, the home of Michelangelo’s famous ceiling fresco.

Rome is the perfect city to explore on foot. Stroll around the center and seek out stunning sights such as the Spanish Steps and the impressive Trevi Fountain. Linger over a glass of Italian wine and delectable local cuisine in squares such as Piazza Navona. Return to these destinations at night to discover the romantic atmosphere of Rome after dark.

Come to Rome outside of the peak months between June and August to enjoy fewer crowds and cooler days ideal for walking the city’s historic streets. In any season of the year, however Rome offers excesses of charm, beauty and history.

Getting around Rome

Get around the center of Rome on foot, but be prepared to make frequent use of the public transportation system to get to other parts of the city, as some of the attractions are quite spaced out. The Metro covers most of the key areas that you are likely to visit, and the bus and tram networks are also comprehensive. Avoid renting a car if you can, as walking in Rome is far more pleasant than driving. Visit the Transport Company of the Municipality of Rome (ATAC) website. Browse Rome rental cars.

Best time to visit

Rome is popular year round, but you will find it at its quietest between October and April. Pack for cool evenings and make sure you bring a coat at this time of year. However, there should still be sun, at least if you are visiting in fall or spring rather than the depths of winter. Accommodations are more affordable in these months and, unlike in the summer, you won’t need to book months in advance.
