Dotted with gorgeous lakes, spiritual hubs and traditional architecture, the West City is a vast window into the customs and culture in central Beijing.

Visit Xicheng, a large central district sweeping across the western part of the old city of Beijing. Great lakes and parks surrounded by historic mansions and temples provide spectacular scenery. Appreciate the royal atmosphere among the palaces and gardens by the water.

In the Downtown Beijing area you’ll find gems such as the Palace of Earthly Tranquility and the remarkable Turret of the Palace Museum. Enjoy views of the adjacent Middle Sea and Southern Sea. Travel around the shores of these lakes and admire the elegant grounds of the Zhaoxian Temple. Enter the resplendent North Cathedral to appreciate its baroque décor.

Watch a classical concert in the Beijing Concert Hall or a play in the spectacular dome of the National Center for the Performing Arts, near the Great Hall of the People at the southern end of the lakes. See the traditional Chinese homes of the nearby Xinhuamen and head west for the Capital Museum, which traces the history and development of Beijing.

Make your way north to Houhai Lake in the Shichahai district and visit Prince Chun’s Mansion and the Shezheng Mansion Mahao. Bars, teahouses and restaurants are dotted across the area, particularly on lively Houhai Bar Street. Wander through the palace gardens of Prince Gong’s Mansion and study the artifacts that belonged to the Manchu prince and statesman.

Relax on a warm day in historic Beihai Park, which dates back to the 11th century. Rent a boat to take out on the water and enjoy views of the old-world buildings.

The Xicheng district covers the center of Beijing, incorporating the Xidan district, Beijing Financial Street and Shichahai, among other zones. Travel around the vast area, which is the largest section in the old city, by metro or bus. Visit some of the surrounding zones, such as Haidian, Wanliu and Fengtai.
