![The church dates from the 12th century, but was largely demolished in 1863 and rebuilt in 1864. It originally consisted of the nave and chancel, and a south aisle was added followed by a small private Chapel on the north side. The north transept is 15th C. and the roof of the north transept and nave are also 15th century. There is also a fine choir screen from the same period. The north transept was built around 1400, and originally had stained-glass windows with ancient coats of arms including those of the donors the Bataille family. This area was later used by Lords of Battles Manor as their private Chapel. The Chapel contains a Memorial to Sir William Waad of Battles Hall, who was a notable diplomat and officer of state. He was Lieutenant of the Tower of London for eight years where some of his prisoners included Guy Fawkes and Sir Walter Raleigh. The chancel was rebuilt in 1746 by Henry Woodyer. The tower was demolished in 1863 as it was unsafe. “At first the property looked nice. But double bedroom smelt as you walked in the door. Getting into bed the smell of urine in bed wasn't very nice. The oven smoked quite bad when in use. The microwave inside was quite rusty so never used it. Carpets in lounge were very stained in places. Bathrooms were good. But no bathmats. There was plenty of hot water. “I am sorry to say that our stay was unexpectedly very bad. Even as we checked in the property was cold. There was NO HEATING and no HOT WATER. After many tephone calls we were told that the we boiler was not functioing. We were given grossly inadequate heaters which did little to correct the situation. It completely wrecked the evening which was the celebration of my wife's 70th Birthday. Our first night was a nightmare with no ability for us and our guests to have shower for two full days even……

"The check-in is slow, inefficient and chaotic which wasted so much of our time and caused lots of inconvenience. The staff is aware of the issue but didn’t show any concerns or try to help the situation. The room is in reasonable shape but the lack of amenities for a Hilton is unacceptable. This is a hot summer here in Cambridge and they don’t even have a fridge in the room?! Don’t expect to have coffee in the room either because they don’t have a coffee maker here… just tea bags and cheap instant hot chocolate (not that I would drink but no instant coffee either). The location is good. So, don’t expect the Hilton quality or service and you would probably be happier… think Marriott Courtyard or 2\~3 star hotel…"
