In the heart of Norwich’s civic center is an Art Deco masterpiece that is home to the stylishly decorated rooms of the city council.

Norwich City Hall is a landmark building home to the administrative offices and ceremonial chambers of Norwich City Council. Admire its imposing architecture, which overlooks Norwich Market, spot a series of sculptures and glimpse inside some of the rooms. Norwich City Hall was unveiled in 1938 by King George VI. It forms part of the Norwich 12, which is a group of heritage buildings built between the Norman and modern eras.

Six Greek-style columns dominate the façade of this Art Deco building. Below here are three bronze doors, each adorned with 18 plaques. The plaques portray elements of Norwich’s history and popular city trades such as the medieval wool industry. A 365-feet (111-meter) long balcony runs along the frontage and is the longest balcony in England.

A 150-feet (46-meter) tall clock tower rises above the building and houses one of the biggest clock bells in the United Kingdom. You can hear the deep tone of its chime on the hour. At the stairway that leads to the main entrance are two sculptures of heraldic lions by Alfred Hardiman. Hardiman was also responsible for three statues, called Recreation, Wisdom and Education, located outside the Council Chamber.

The Art Deco design continues inside and is recognizable in the public areas. Note the use of timber paneling and Italian marble. Names of city mayors are inscribed into the walls of the entrance hall and landing. Some areas might be inaccessible when official meetings are taking place.

Located in the city center, the building is a 15-minute walk from Norwich train station. Metered parking is available on nearby St. Giles Street. There’s plenty to do in the vicinity of this attraction. Visit the medieval Norwich Guildhall and browse hundreds of stalls at the open-air Norwich Market.

You can stop to appreciate Norwich City Hall from the outside at any time of the day. In December it is the focal point for the city’s Christmas lights display. The inside is open during business hours.
