When you've checked out all of the terrific places in San Juan, there's a lot more to discover in the surrounding area. Grab the keys to a rental car, toss your luggage in the trunk and hit the open road. We've pulled together some drives we know you'll enjoy:

• You'll find New Cathedral of Salamanca and lots more intriguing sights in Salamanca. From San Juan, it's about 110 miles away.
• About 50 miles away, Badajoz is also a favorite with travelers. Make time to get to Badajoz Fortress while you're in town. It's one of the reasons people love this vibrant city.
• La Barrosa Beach is approximately 220 miles from San Juan and is one of the region's most beautiful nature spots. Stretch your legs and enjoy the fresh air.

If you don't hold a driver's license issued in Spain, then you might need to get an International Driving Permit (IDP) in your place of residence to be able to rent a car. Also consider that if an IDP is required, it has no validity on its own. You'll be asked to show your current driver's license your passport and other forms of identification as well. Lastly, make sure the credit card used to book the rental matches the name on your license and passport. A few other things to note for international car rentals are:

• Age restrictions: You'll need to be at least 25 in many countries to rent a car. If you're younger than that, it may still be possible to rent a car but you'll have to pay a Young Driver's Surcharge. Additional restrictions may also apply to the types of vehicles available to rent.
