Since its founding in 1958, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has become one of the premier contemporary dance companies in the country. Beginning with a now-fabled performance by African American dancers at the 92nd Street Y community center in New York City, the company has since go on to perform for an estimated 25 million people at theaters in 48 states and 71 countries on 6 continents. With a focus on training, education, and community programs, the AAADT seeks to preserve the modern American dance heritage while using African American culture to unite people of all races, ages, and backgrounds. Get tickets to experience a live performance by this legendary company in a city near you.
Originally founded by choreographer Alvin Ailey as an all-black dance company, the AAADT was eventually made open to dancers of all backgrounds, with the hope being to bring races together to create something beautiful during a time when racial tensions were at an all-time high. In his 3 decades with the company, until his death in 1989, My. Ailey created 79 ballets, drawing upon his “blood memories” of Texas, the blues, spirituals, and gospel, ultimately resulting in the creations of Revelations, his most popular and critically acclaimed work. Today, the company continues to present important works from the past as well as commissioning new ones, with more than 235 works by 90 choreographers having been part of the repertory. In 2018, get tickets to see this iconic troupe on tour in cities such as Berkeley, Seattle, and Newark.
