One of the fastest-growing major cities in America and a cultural center of the Northwest, Seattle has the feel of a place where big things are happening. This is the community that gave us both Jimi Hendrix and Macklemore and is also home to a variety of sports—from NFL football to roller derby. Founded in the later half of the 19th century and existing as a sleepy harbor town until the middle of the 20th century, Seattle has the dynamic feel you get from one of America’s newer metropolises. As a result, the city’s venues have a certain modern flair, such as the technology-infused design of Benaroya Hall that gives the Seattle Symphony its incredible acoustics. The Symphony’s old home at McCaw Hall got its own gleaming, glass-framed renovation in 2003, hosting the Seattle Opera and Pacific Northwest Ballet in style.
Sports in Seattle are dominated by KeyArena, which sits in the shadow of the Space Needle and dates back to the 1962 World’s Fair, and the pair of giant stadiums that stand tall above the landscape south of downtown. The Seahawks and Sounders play 2 different kinds of football at CenturyLink Field, while the Mariners play baseball across the street at Safeco Field. KeyArena hosts the WNBA powerhouse Seattle Storm, along with the Seattle University Redhawks and entertainers like the Harlem Globetrotters and Pink. The oldest stadium in town is up in the University District, where Husky Stadium has been home to University of Washington football since 1920 (and earned a reputation as one of the loudest venues in the sport).
Seattle has nurtured one of the oldest and liveliest theater scenes on the West Coast. The Paramount Theatre regularly hosts Broadway shows like The Book of Mormon alongside concerts featuring artists from Madonna to Nirvana, while the century-old Moore Theatre hosts big names in comedy like Lewis Black and Weird Al Yankovic in Gilded Age elegance.
