The Birmingham Bowl is an annual college football game held in Birmingham, AL. The game is owned and operated by ESPN Events; however, University of Alabama at Birmingham provides marketing, management, and game-day support. Previously, the game was known as the PapaJohns.com Bowl (2006-2010) and the Compass Bowl (2011-2014). The game was played at Legion Field until recently when it was moved to Protective Stadium
The bowl marks the return of post-season football to Birmingham. Previously, the city hosted the Dixie Bowl, Hall of Fame Classic, and the All-American Bowl. The inaugural matchup pitted South Florida versus East Carolina Originally the bowl had a conference tie-in with Conference-USA and the Big East. The game currently features a team from the SEC and the American Athletic Conference.
