The breakup of his band, a relationship, and a battle with illness led Justin Vernon to isolate himself for the winter months in his father’s cabin in Wisconsin. Though he did not intend to produce a record during his trip, Vernon had basic recording equipment with him from help The Rosebuds record their music. Vernon decided to release the songs independently using cardstock CD’s. With overwhelming positive feedback from fans, For Emma, Forever Ago was officially released by Jagjaguwar in 2008. The record was ranked 92 on Rolling Stone’s 100 Best Albums of the 2000s. In 2010, Bon Iver collaborated with Kanye West on My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, producing vocals for “Lost in the World”, “Monster”, and “Dark Fantasy”. Bon Iver, Bon Iver, their second album, was recorded in a remodeled veterinarian clinic bought by Vernon and his brother. The album was released in 2011 to critical acclaim. Pitchfork.com awarded Bon Iver, Bon Iver the best album of 2011, and gave Bon Iver Grammy’s for Best New Artist and Best Alternative Album in 2012. After a four year hiatus, Bon Iver came back to the scene with 22, A Million in 2016. Pitchfork.com’s review of the album related it to a similar venture that Radiohead took, calling it an “unexpected turn toward the strange and experimental”.
