In 1980, the ballet became the first American dance company to perform in China and, later that decade, the first to perform at the annual Bessie Awards. It was also the first major company to commission works from renowned contemporary choreographers such as Mark Morris, Susan Marshall, Elisa Monte, and Helen Pickett.
Today, the Boston Ballet is comprised of more than 60 dancers of 16 nationalities, representing the highest caliber of international talent on the stage. The company’s broad repertoire combines timeless favorites like Sleeping Beauty, The Nutcracker, and La Sylphide with contemporary versions of classics like Romeo & Juliet and Swan Lake.
