History of the Boston Ballet

Roughly 16 years after its founding, the Boston Ballet opened the Boston Ballet School, which has grown from humble beginnings to a full-fledged program serving thousands of students at 3 facilities in and around Boston. In 1980, the ballet became the first American dance company to perform in China and, later that decade, the first to perform at the annual Bessie Awards. It was also the first major company to commission works from renowned contemporary choreographers such as Mark Morris, Susan Marshall, Elisa Monte, and Helen Pickett.

The New York City Ballet Today
