As one of the more recent teams to join the NBA, the Charlotte Hornets are still in their early days, trying to find their footing in the Eastern Conference of the league. Since their inception in 1988, the Hornets have made appearances in 10 NBA Playoffs, though they have yet to bring home a division or conference championship to Charlotte. That said, that hasn’t stopped the team from packing in the crowds at the Spectrum Center, thanks to hard-driving, rim-rattling action brought by stars such as Kemba Walker and Dwight Howard. And of course, there’s always the chance of spotting current owner and NBA legend Michael Jordan. Grab tickets to cheer on the team as they fight for another spot in the playoffs.
Alongside the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Orlando Magic, and the Miami Heat,
the Charlotte Hornets were founded in 1988 as 1 of the 4 new expansion teams to join the NBA. Their early years were met by
mediocre success, though they reached the playoffs for the first time in 1993 following the signing of future All-Stars
Larry Johnson and Alonzo Mourning. Together with other players such as Dell Curry, Glen Rice, and Muggsy Bogues, the 2
ushered in an era of winning seasons that would take the Hornets into 7 playoffs in 10 years.
In 2002, the
franchise relocated to New Orleans and left Charlotte without a basketball team for 2 seasons. Then in 2004, the NBA
established the Charlotte Bobcats as yet another expansion team. Despite signing stars like Gerald Wallace and future Rookie
of the Year Emeka Okafor, the next decade was not particularly successful, as the Bobcats only hit 2 winning seasons and
even had their worst season in Charlotte basketball history.
The Charlotte Hornets announced their five game 2022-23 preseason schedule, highlighted by hosting a preseason game at the Greensboro Coliseum against the defending Eastern Conference champion Boston Celtics (Oct. 7), as well as two home matchups at Spectrum Centre vs. the Indiana Pacers (Oct. 5) and the Washington Wizards (Oct. 10). he 2022–23 Charlotte Hornets season will be the 33rd season of the franchise in the National Basketball Association. On April 22, 2022, the Charlotte Hornets replaced James Borrego after four years with the team with no playoff appearances.
