Clemson Football Traditions

Clemson has quite a few traditions that have held up throughout the years. One of the most well-known is "Howard's Rock" The rock was given to a former Clemson coach by a friend as a token of good luck. When the team gathers to run down the hill, players will rub the rock that is mounted on a pedestal before taking the field. "Running Down the Hill" is what has been described as one of the most exciting moments in college sports. Players load into busses from the locker room, go around the other side of the stadium and enter where the rock is mounted. When Clemson plays the South Carolina Gamecocks everyone in the state of South Carolina is watching. The two rivals have been at it since 1896 with the two programs meeting close to 120 times. The game is usually held in late November, on Thanksgiving weekend.
