With a history dating back to 1970, the Cleveland Cavaliers—or simply the Cavs—have a rollercoaster past marked by heartbreaking losses, miraculous triumphs, and, recently, a history-making victory over the Golden State Warriors. Since their inception, the Cavs have won 6 division titles, 4 conference championships, and the 2016 NBA Finals. The team has become a symbol of pride for the people of Cleveland, and fans rush to get affordable tickets to watch them battle it out at Quicken Loans Arena.

History

Beginning with the 1970–1971 season, the Cavs’ first few decades were a time for exciting highs and extremely upsetting lows. The initial years brought about 5 consecutive losing seasons immediately followed by their first division championship, and eventually 10 turns at the playoffs between 1985 and 1998. Unfortunately, the turnaround didn’t last long, as the Cavs failed to reach the playoffs again until 2006.

But everything began to change in 2003 when the team nabbed the no. 1 draft pick, selecting high school phenom and future 4-time MVP LeBron James. Over the next few years, the Cavs built a roster around James and Zydrunas Ilgauskas, adding the likes of Drew Gooden, Larry Hughes, and Anderson Varejao. Together, the team advanced into every playoff from 2006 to 2010 and, for the very first, made it all the way to the Finals in 2007. What’s more, the 2008-09 Cavs are considered by basketball analysts to be among the top 10 teams in NBA history.

But then, of course, came a time that Cavs fans would all like to forget—the moment LeBron made “The Decision” to leave Cleveland for the Miami Heat. During his absence, the team would suffer the NBA’s biggest drop in single-season wins and began to focus their attention on rebuilding. But everything changed yet again when, in 2014, LeBron returned to the Cavs. Alongside power players Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love, James led the team to 3 consecutive NBA Finals, facing off against the Warriors in each. In 2016, the Cavs took home their first-ever NBA Championship, making history by becoming the first team to win the series after trailing 3 games to 1, and also bringing their city its first major sports title since 1964.

Today, under Head Coach Tyronn Lue, the Cavs continue to be a contender for the championship. Lue has built a roster that not only includes James and Love, but NBA All-Stars Dwyane Wade, Kyle Korver, and Derrick Rose.
