First the Philadelphia Warriors and then the San Francisco Warriors, the NBA team now known as the Golden State Warriors has a history dating back to 1946 as a founding member of the Basketball Association of America. Though they haven’t always been a top performer, the team is tied with the San Antonio Spurs with 5 NBA championships, in fourth place behind the Boston Celtics, the Los Angeles Lakers, and the Chicago Bulls. Winning the last 3 Western Conference titles and 2 of the last 3 playoffs, the team has definitely reinvigorated their fan base. Starting in Philadelphia in 1946, the Warriors began with a bang—not only taking home the season’s conference championship but the national title.
They continued to play well over the next decade, again nabbing the national championship in 1956. Three years later, the team signed Wilt Chamberlain, who has since gone down in history as one of the top 10 NBA
players of all time. He quickly began shattering records and, in 1962, scored an unbelievable 100 points in a single game, which still holds the record to this day.
After being purchased by radio and
TV producer Franklin Mieuli, the team moved to the Bay Area in 1962 and became known as the San Francisco Warriors. Within 9 years, the team was playing home games across the state, from San Diego to San Jose,
and in 1971, Golden State Warriors was officially adopted as their name. The next 40 years was marked by incredible highs and disappointing lows. The Warriors again nabbed the national title in 1975, lost a
conference semifinal to the LA Lakers, earned the then-active record for the most consecutive seasons without a playoff appearance, and finally, in 2009, signed Stephen Curry, who would later go on to become the
only Warrior other than Chamberlain to be named MVP.
Together with “Splash Brother” Klay Thompson and teammate Draymond Green, Curry led the Warriors through a remarkable 2014–15 season, winning the conference championship and eventually taking the national title over the Cleveland Cavaliers. In 2016, they broke the all-time record for most games won in a single season—a record previously held by the 1996 Chicago Bulls. And after the addition of Kevin Durant, they did it all over again in 2017, winning their second NBA championship over the Cavs. Under Head Coach Steve Kerr, the 2015 and ‘17 teams have been analyzed as the no. 10 and no. 3 NBA teams of all time. The 2022–23 Golden State Warriors season will be the 76th season of the franchise in the National Basketball Association, their 61st in the San Francisco Bay Area, and their fourth season at the Chase Center. The Warriors will enter the season as defending champions after winning the 2022 NBA Finals against the Boston Celtics during the previous season in six games.
