Houston Texans Team History

After a failed attempt to bring a National Hockey League (NHL) expansion team to Houston, entrepreneur Bob McNair and Steve Patterson founded the Houston Texans in 1999 as the 32nd NFL team, but did not officially join the league until the 2002 season. With their opening game victory over the Dallas Cowboys, the Texans became the first expansion team to win its opening game since the Minnesota Vikings beat the Chicago Bears in 1961. While the team mainly struggled in the 2000s, they found success in the 2011 season after clinching their first playoff and division championship. The Texans went on to win three more AFC South championships in 2012, 2015, and 2016. However, the team is the only NFL franchise to have never played in a conference championship game.

Houston Texans Today

The 2017 NFL season was the 16th for the Houston Texans, and fourth under head coach Bill O’Brien. With the Texan’s loss against the Tennessee Titans in Week 13, Houston exceeded their loss total from 2014, 2015 and 2016. Unfortunately, the Texans clinched their first losing seasons since 2013 and finished in last place in the AFC South. The team had high hopes for the season with Deshaun Watson as their starting quarterback who broke rookie records. However, after a loss in Week 8, Watson tore his ACL that marked him out for the rest of the season. The team was also affected by the loss of defensive end J.J. Watt, who for the second consecutive season, was lost early due to injury. Fans remain hopeful that with recovering players, the Texans are on the verge of major success this year.
