Houston Texans Team History
After a failed attempt to bring a National Hockey League (NHL) expansion team to Houston, entrepreneur Bob McNair and Steve Patterson founded the Houston Texans in 1999 as the 32nd NFL team, but did not officially join the league until the 2002 season. With their opening game victory over the Dallas Cowboys, the Texans became the first expansion team to win its opening game since the Minnesota Vikings beat the Chicago Bears in 1961. While the team mainly struggled in the 2000s, they found success in the 2011 season after clinching their first playoff and division championship. The Texans went on to win three more AFC South championships in 2012, 2015, and 2016. However, the team is the only NFL franchise to have never played in a conference championship game.
