Gospel Singer To Pop Queen

The singer actually began her music career as a gospel singer, releasing her debut studio album titled Katy Hudson in 2001. After this album failed to break through commercially, she moved to Los Angeles where she adopted the stage name Katy Perry and shifted her focus toward secular music. Perry’s first single with Capitol Records, “I Kissed a Girl”, reached the number one spot on the Billboard Hot 100. Though it stirred controversy, the single and its following album would go on to sell 7 million copies worldwide. In 2010, Perry released Teenage Dream, which titled Perry the first female artist to achieve five number one Billboard Hot 100 songs from one album. She would set another record, spending 69 consecutive weeks in the top ten. The following tour grossed $59.5 million and won her the Best Live Act Award at the 2011 MTV Europe Music Awards. Prism was released in 2013, which brought forth another handful of U.S. number one songs. In 2016, she recorded the single “Rise”, which was used in NBC Sports’ coverage of the 2016 Summer Olympics. Her fifth studio album, Witness, was released the following year, debuting at number one. Recently, Calvin Harris released “Feels”, featuring Perry, Big Sean and Pharrell Williams. In 2018, Perry was asked to serve as a judge on the revived American Idol. In her most recent venture, Perry performed “Here You Come Again” with Dolly Parton and Kacey Musgraves at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards.
