On April 24, 1995, Kehlani Ashley Parrish’s mother gave birth to her while on the run from the police. Kehlani’s father died of a drug overdose when she was a baby. While her mother served time in jail, Kehlani was raised by her aunt in Oakland, California. As a teenager, Kehlani trained as a dancer at the Oakland School for the Arts, but after a knee injury, she switched her focus to singing. Kehlani cites Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu, and Jill Scott as early musical influences who shaped her style. At 14, the pop cover band named PopLyfe recruited Kehlani and started her musical career. After the group finished 4th on America’s Got Talent in 2011, Kehlani left the group due to managerial and contractual disputes and was essentially homeless. She even had to filch food from grocery stores to stay fed, but Kehlani kept her focus on music and eventually released her first solo track called “ANTISUMMERLUV” on SoundCloud, which attracted the attention of Nick Cannon who set her up in Los Angeles with studio time. Since then, she has released several mix tapes, signed a deal with Atlantic Records, and seen her popularity rise.
