Born in Compton, California, Kendrick Lamar Duckworth found music at an early age and released his first full-length mixtape at just 16. It led Lamar to secure a contract with new indie label Top Dawg Entertainment, under which he began working with other up-and-coming West Coast rappers such as Jay Rock, Ya Boy, and Tech N9ne. His 2010 song “Ignorance Is Bliss” attracted the attention of Dr. Dre, and soon Lamar was being featured on Dre’s album Detox. In 2012, he released his first major record, good kid, m.A.A.d city, to widespread critical acclaim. Since then, he’s collaborated with a range of artists from Eminem to Taylor Swift, has served as a supporting act for the Kanye West Yeezus Tour, and frequently hits the road with his Black Hippy supergroup that includes Jay Rock, Ab-Soul, and Schoolboy Q.
