First known as the Buffalo Braves then the San Diego Clippers before the making the move to Los Angeles, the team now known as the LA Clippers have recently started to see success after decades of disappointment. Since its inception in 1970, the team has had a hard time finding its footing in its conference, often drawing unfavorable comparisons to their in-city rivals the Lakers, with whom they’ve shared the Staples Center since 1999. But things began to turn around for the Clippers in the early 2010s, when they took home 2 consecutive division titles thanks to key players such as Blake Griffin, DeAndre Jordan, and Chris Paul. These wins have brought a renewed sense of excitement around the team and fans flock to grab tickets to see them battle it out on the court.
Alongside the Portland Trail Blazers and the Cleveland Cavaliers, the LA Clippers began as the Buffalo Braves as 1 of the 3 new expansion teams to join the 1970 season. They spent 8 years in Buffalo, only enjoying 3 winning seasons but appearing in the playoffs each of those 3 years. Then, in 1978, the Braves were relocated to San Diego to replace the team that was lost to Houston. The name of the team was then changed to the Clippers in honor of the sailing ships that pass through San Diego Bay. They spent 6 years there, with only 1 winning season before moving to Los Angeles, Anaheim, and back to Los Angeles again. The next 27 years were marked by limited success, with the team only appearing in 4 NBA Playoffs despite having big-name players such as Bill Walton, Jamaal Wilkes, and Dominique Wilkins.
The Clippers greatest period of success began in 2011 following the signing of power forward Blake Griffin, point guard Chris Paul, and center DeAndre Jordan. Together, the 3 helped turn the team into “Lob City”—a nickname earned for their frequent high-flying alley-oops. Beginning in 2012, the Clippers went on a streak of winning seasons and playoff appearances, and for the first time in their history, took home the Pacific Division title. Though the team has since lost both Griffin and Paul, the Clippers are still bringing the heat at the Staples Center. Come 2024, fans will be able to get tickets to see the team take on their rivals at a brand new arena directly south of the Los Angeles Stadium in Inglewood.
