How it Works

There are two types of bowl games; College Football Playoff (CFP) Games and Non-College Football Playoff (NCFP) Games. The CFP games are used to help determine who the national champion is for the current season. There are six CFP games, including the Orange Bowl, Cotton Bowl, and Rose Bowl, and thirty-three NCFP games. To be qualified to play in any bowl game you need to have won at least six out of the twelve regular season games.  Teams for the CFP games are determined by the top four teams in the top twenty-five ranking for the season. The two semifinal bowl games for the 2022-2023 season are the Peach Bowl and the Fiesta Bowl. The winners of each game go on to face each other in the College Football Championship game at SoFi Stadium. Here's a preview of some of the top bowl games this season:

Peach Bowl CFP Semifinal

No. 1 Georgia vs. No. 4 Ohio State

Georgia, is not only the defending national champions, but the team is firing on all cylinders. They've managed to cruise through the season and go undefeated with only a few close calls. The defense has been absolutely lights out and the offense, led by quarterback Stetson Bennett has been playing at an elite level as well. The Buckeyes were on the brink of not being in the playoffs after losing to Michigan but thanks to a USC loss, Ohio State will head to Mercedes-Benz Stadium and try and pull off an upset.

Fiesta Bowl CFP Semifinal

No. 2 Michigan vs. No. 3 TCU

Neither team has ever played for a national championship in the BCS/CFP era, so whoever wins will be making history. Michigan has a strong run game led by Donovan Edwards. TCU's offense has been stellar, proving they're capable of big plays and have tons of fight in them, overcoming numerous second half deficits. Will the Wolverines be able to keep up with TCU's fast-pcased offense.

Rose Bowl

No. 8 Utah vs. No. 11 Penn State

The Utes are riding a wave of momentum after defeating USC in the Pac-12 Championship game. Last year saw Utah losing to Ohio State in the Rose Bowl, so there's no doubt they want to redeem themselves. Penn State's only two losses this season are against Michigan and Ohio State, two CFP teams. The two programs go head-to-head in one of the most storied venues in college sports - the Rose Bowl

Cotton Bowl

No. 10 USC vs. No. 16 Tulane

USC will look to pick up the pieces after their heartbreaking loss in the Pac-12 Championship. The Trojans hope the time off is enough for quarterback Caleb Williams to heal from an injured hamstring. Tulane will look to exploit USC's shaky defense as this is their biggest bowl game appearance since the 1939 Sugar Bowl.

Sugar Bowl

No. 5 Alabama vs. No. 9 Kansas State

The Crimson Tide head to the Caesars Superdome for their first non-CFP in what seems like a long time. They face one of the hottest teams in college football in Kansas State. The Wildcats are coming off a big win after knocking off TCU in the Big 12 title game. Led by Deuce Vaughn, the Wildcats offense will undoubtedly keep Alabama's defense on its toes.

Orange Bowl

No. 7 Clemson vs. No. 6 Tennessee

South Florida's Hard Rock Stadium will play host to two teams whose colors are orange. Pretty fitting for this battle between the Clemson Tigers and Tennessee Volunteers. Tennessee put together an impressive season with a notable win over Alabama. The Vols haven't won a major bowl game since 2004 but ACC champs Clemson are no pushover and will be a tough opponent.
