No team in baseball has had quite the same rollercoaster of fortune as the New York Metropolitans. The self-appointed successors to 2 iconic franchises that left New York for the California sun, the Mets have run up a record of heartbreaking losses, miraculous triumphs, and amazing plays that have captivated audiences for half a century. Mets tickets can sell fast thanks to a loyal fan base and the fact that you never quite know what the next game will bring.
After both the Giants and the Dodgers left New York in 1958, bringing a National League team back to America’s largest city was a matter of pride. William Shea made it happen 4 years later, creating one of the sport’s first expansion teams and bringing baseball to Queens. With a keen eye for their legacy, the Mets adopted the Giants’ old logo and combined their old orange colors with the Dodgers’ blue.
The Mets had a rough start, setting a record for the most losses in their inaugural season and finishing at or near the bottom for the next 6 years. That made it all the sweeter in 1969, when Tom Seaver led the team all the way to the World Series, where they became the first expansion team to win it all.
Since then, the Mets have been busy creating their own legacy, with 4 more World Series appearances and some incredible milestones—from their epic 16-inning victory over the Astros to win the pennant in 1986 to Johan Santana’s no-hitter against the Cardinals in 2012. The team’s seasons at Citi Field set attendance records that have often topped the Yankees’ numbers, and any Mets game can leave you with the feeling that you’re a part of something special.
The Mets were founded as an expansion team in 1962.
The New York Mets' home ballpark is Citi Field, which is located in Flushing, a section of Queens.
Yes, they've won it twice. Once in 1969, and the second in 1986.
Mr. Met, the anthropomorphic baseball-headed creature has been the team mascot since his debut in 1964. He is one of the most iconic and recognizable mascots in professional sports.
Despite the two teams being neighbors for decades, the two franchises wouldn't meet until 1997. They've since met over 100 times.
