The first ever National Football Championship game occurred in 1933 as a result of two teams tying for the overall winning record. The Chicago Bears and the Portsmouth Spartans both finished with identical win percentages, which back then was used to decide who the champion for the season was. To break the tie an additional game was needed to be played between the two teams, ultimately the Bears were announced the winners after they defeated the Spartans 9-0. While at the time this was not considered to be a playoff game by any means, it gained enough popularity that years later it became known as the first official NFL Championship Game.
Following the 1933 championship game, the league decided that they wanted to expand upon the idea of a longer post season. The following season they broke the league up into two conferences and at the end of the season the team with the highest winning percentage from each conference faced off to decide the league champion. Up until the first Super Bowl in 1967 this format was used to determine the overall winning team of the league. From 1967 to 1969 the Super Bowl was played between the champions of the AFL and the NFL as an inter-league championship game. After the 1970 merger it became a championship game between the the two conference champions within the NFL.
Today the two conferences, AFC and NFC, are broken down into four divisions each equating to sixteen teams per conference. The top six teams from each conference compete against each other for the chance to face off in the winner take all Super Bowl. The teams from each conference are chosen as follows: the four division champions from each conference are automatically qualified, from there two wild card spots are filled with the teams that have the next highest regular season record in the conference. After three rounds of battling conference champions are announced and the two face off in the Super Bowl.

San Francisco 49ers at Philadelphia Eagles
This is the NFC Championship matchup that we all expected. The two most dominant teams facing off for a chance to play in the Super Bowl. The Niners and Eagles have not faced each this season. Philadelphia is riding high with the MVP-caliber season they've gotten from quarterback Jalen Hurts. Hurts has an excellent supporting cast in his receiving corps; however, he's still been hampered by a shoulder injury suffered more than a month ago. The Niners are led by the unlikeliest of hero's - third string quarterback Brock Purdy (who also happened to be the very last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft) San Fran also has a supporting cast of offensive weapons and quite possibly the most dominant defense in the league.
Cincinnati Bengals at Kansas City Chiefs
It's feels a little like déjà vu when these two AFC rivals face each other; however, these two teams are hardly the same two that squared off a year ago. Last season it came down to overtime in which the heroics of Cincy quarterback Joe Burrow took the Bengals to their first Super Bowl in 33 years. The two teams have battled it out three times since the 2021 season, with the Bengals winning each matchup by three points each time. Mahomes is 1-3 in his career against Cincinnatti and is hobbled by a high ankle sprain. Burrow on the other hand has been stellar this postseason and is looking to lock up another trip to the Super Bowl by going into Arrowhead Stadium and defeating the Chiefs.
