Senatorial History

Before the modern Senators took the ice in 1992, Ottawa had an earlier team with the same name that won 11 Stanley Cups. Though the 2 teams do not share a direct lineage, they illustrate the unity between the past and present that the Senators have come to represent. The newly formed Senators’ first game in 1992, was a 5–3 win over the Montreal Canadiens, but the rest of the season wasn’t so successful. The following years saw some downs with some growing pains, but the Senators also made their first playoff appearance in 1997. The controversy surrounding Alexei Yashin’s constant contract demands, which he ultimately failed at, ended up creating a better Sens franchise when he was traded to the New York Islanders for the second-overall pick, which they used to nab All-Star Jason Spezza. With the addition of Daniel Alfredsson and Dany Heatley, the team formed its formidable CASH Line, who ended up leading the team into their first Stanley Cup Finals. Though they lost to the Anaheim Ducks, Ottawa fans flooded the streets throughout the playoffs creating the Sens Mile, a street that was blocked off for most of the postseason to accommodate the overflowing Sens Army. This remarkable fanbase has provided the foundation for the team’s success, and they also make tickets to see a Senators game unlike any other in hockey. No matter what highs or lows the team has hit over the years, the crowds continue to fill the Canadian Tire Centre for every game.

Today’s Senators
