Bringing Major League Baseball to the Pacific Northwest for more than 30 years, the Mariners deliver phenomenal players and a competitive spirit that refuses to quit. A team that has fielded some of the greatest players of their time has been a fierce competitor to some of the strongest opponents in the sport, building a library of epic sports moments in Seattle. Tickets to a Mariners game let you follow the team on their latest quest for the playoffs and watch the next chapter in the history of baseball on the West Coast.
The Mariners came into being in the aftermath the disastrous single season that the Seattle Pilots spent in the city before they fled to Milwaukee. Not for the last time, the Emerald City discovered a new enthusiasm for the home team when they were faced with losing it, and years of campaigning and legal battles convinced Major League baseball to give Seattle a second expansion team in 1977.
Leaving the Pilots’ name and ignominious legacy behind, the M’s faced their own early struggles. The team needed until 1991 before they posted a winning record, and spent the next decade at the edge of greatness. In 1995, when they beat the New York Yankees in the playoffs but then fell short of the pennant in Cleveland. In 2001, they tied the 1906 Chicago Cubs for the most season wins in Major League history, but lost the pennant to the Yankees.
In their quest to reach the top tier of commanding sports franchises, the Mariners have shown a keen eye for talent. From Edgar Martinez and Randy Johnson to Ken Griffey, Jr., Alex Rodriguez, and Félix Hernández, the team has counted a succession of phenomenal players among their number, including many who started their career as Mariners. Tickets to a game at Safeco Field are one of the great things to do in Seattle, and wherever they’re playing, you get a great look at how the Northwest does baseball.
The Mariners joined Major League Baseball as an expansion team in 1977.
