Spring Training games were in wide use by 1910. Chicago White Stockings President Albert Spalding and Cap Anson came up with the idea in 1886. They took their team the the Hot Springs Baseball Grounds to prepare for the upcoming season, and went on to play impressively that year. Other franchises took notice and started joining Chicago in Hot Springs, leading to the first Spring training games. Teams began to open training facilities all around the country. With the popularity or these games growing along teams and fans altogether, leagues naturally started to form. They are called the Grapefruit League and the Cactus League, with the latter being an integral part in our history with segregation in sports. Teams like the Boston Red Sox, Houston Astros, New York Yankees, and The Washington Nationals are a part of the Grapefruit League, while the Cactus League houses teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Milwaukee Brewers, and the Seattle Mariners. Statistics during Spring training are recorded, but are not combined with official season statistics. Any record breaking statistics are deemed unofficial as well. For example, the Red Sox achieved a 5-0 perfect game over the Toronto Blue Jays using 6 pitchers in 2000. However, the statistic took very little notice in comparison to if it happened in the regular season.
Spring Training 2019 is drawing out the upcoming season. The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees are baseball’s two teams and should win over 100 games each this year, but will have to face a solid Tampa Bay Rays lineup. The Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Nationals are looking good in the National League, along with the Phillies and their new teammate, Bryce Harper.
