Fighting His Way Out

Ortiz faced a difficult childhood, and it is close to a miracle that he found his professional fighting outlet. Both of his parents were addicted to heroin, and Ortiz was involved with gang violence and drugs himself. It was not until he was 19 and living on the streets did he bump into his high school wrestling coach Paul Herrara, who encouraged him to enroll into the college that he coached wrestling at. Ortiz’s martial arts debut was at UFC 13 in 1997, where he faced Wes Albritton in the first round. When the Middleweight division changed to the Light Heavyweight, Ortiz was deemed the top contender. He held the record 5 times in the following three years. Ortiz has taken several hiatuses during his career. In 2005, him and Ken Shamrock coached The Ultimate Fighter 3 reality TV series on Spike TV. During Ortiz’s brief retirement from fighting, he started up Primetime 360 Entertainment & Sports Management Inc. The management company took in athletes like Cristiane “Cyborg” Justino, who later became the manager for the company when Ortiz came out of fighting retirement. Ortiz focused on Bellator fights during 2013-2017. At Bellator 170, Ortiz announced that it would be his last mixed martial arts fight before winning the fight in the first round. However, Ortiz’s comeback was yet again announced by Golden Boy Promotions, and he fought and beat Chuck Liddell at the end of 2018.
