The formation of the WNBA was approved by the NBA Board of Governors in 1996. After the massive gold medal run by the 1996 USA Basketball Women’s National Team, the WNBA began its first season in 1997 to a very small audience. The American basketball League, a league that was competing with the WNBA to remain in prominence, folded in 1999. The standout performers of the league moved to the WNBA, enhancing the quality of play. Bill Laimbeer, former Detroit Pistons forward, took over the Detroit Shock in 2003. Laimbeer took a previous 9-23 record and recorded a 25-9 mark in his inaugural season. In 2005,former Los Angeles Lakers coach Paul Westhead was brought in as head coach for the Phoenix Mercury. His fast-paced offensive style of play could not be handled by other franchises. The team was averaging 93.2 points per game in the Finals series that year. This season is referred to as the most successful record by a WNBA team. In 2013, the WNBA Draft was televised on ESPN for the first time. Brittney Griner, Elena Delle Donne, and Skylar Diggins, the first 3 picks of the draft, became known as “The Three To See”. So many other amazing athletes came out of the WNBA, and the formation of the league is probably one of the most important decisions in sports history.
The WNBA draft for 2019 is to be held on April 10th, with the regular season starting at the end of May. Prospects like Sabrina Ionescu, Asia Durr, and Jackie Young are predicted to storm into the WNBA with explosive skills and quality basketball.
