Stayed two nights during Grad week

Posted Jun 25, 2012
Pros: Comfy bed, nice breakfast, wifi.
Cons: Hotel is looking tired and is overdue a lick of paint and upgrading.
Location: A few miles out of St. Andrews so would advise using own car. St. Andrews is a lovely place to visit. Also visit Anstruther for the fish and chips!
Had stayed here before and accommodated relatives here in the past, but this time we were not impressed. We arrived in pouring rain and 10 degC temp, in June! The rooms are accessed from outside but no umbrellas were available in reception so we were soaked when we got to the room. The room had no heating on so was very cold. The lady that showed us the room switched on the water heater and advised that there would be hot water in "about an hour". Looking around the room, it was sparsly furnished, a school style metal framed chair, 1980s square CRT TV, chipped lamp shade, dirty marked walls, grubby looking cover on the settee/extra bed, peeling paint on the radiator and around bathroom window, marked bath surround. I located the radiator valve and turned it on to warm the room. The valve to the bathroom radiator had no effect and the bathroom remained cold. The duvet was folded at the bottom of the bed, which we unrolled before climbing in. Very comfy bed, but seemed odd to have to prepare things oneself. The outside of the hotel was also suffering from dirty looking walls and peeling paint. A notice at reception advertised an evening of music, a few days previously! The breakfast was great and went a long way to making up for our cold and damp arrival. The staff at breakfast were charming. I requested to have the settee cover changed, which was promised by the lady at reception but didn't actually happen as it still looked grubby when we returned for the second evening.
